Enchanted Engelberg

Construction work on the gondola lift Construction on the new eight- seater gondola lift from Engelberg to Stand via Trübsee started in May 2014. From the 2015/16 winter season, the gondola will take visitors from the valley station in Engelberg directly up to the Stand in just 15 minutes. Work ceased during the winter season as planned, but has restarted this spring. The gondola lift, operated by Gara- venta, starts at the Titlis Rotair valley station, where the new station is being built. The route of the first section follows a direct line to Trübsee. Twenty support towers are being erected for this section. The new middle station, much of which is underground, is being built at the Trübsee hotel. The second section runs parallel to the existing classic cableway from Trüb- see to Stand. Fourteen support towers are being erected along a cable length of almost two kilometres. The former restaurant on the Stand has been remo- ved to make way for a new mountain station that will occupy the same foun- dations. Once the new gondola lift is operational, the cables, support towers and tower foundations of the existing six-seater gondola lift on the Engel- berg-Gerschnialp-Trübsee route will be completely dismantled. From 25 September to 4 October 2015, Engelberg will be overrun with witches, fairies and ghosts when the Fairy Tale Festival takes place for the fourth time. During the “ÄngelMär- liBärg”, as the festival is known in Swiss, the village will be transformed into a magical place with events for fairy tale fans of all ages. Children can listen to sagas from Engelberg’s history presented in a playful manner at the fairy tale mornings in the Tal Museum. Older visitors can join the Sagenwan- derung walk and explore the mysteri- ous myths and legends passed down through the centuries. Things get spoo- ky at the Grünenwald theatre, while junior magicians take to the stage at the Ängelzwärg circus on Dorfstra- sse – here, children can display their conjuring skills, artistic talents and comedy sketches. During her fairy tale sessions, well-known storyteller Jolan- da Steiner takes children on a journey into strange worlds and forgotten fairy tales with weird and wonderful pup- pet protagonists. The Favola e Tavola evening offers guests tasty treats and intriguing tales. Both the stories and the food centre around a journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Engelberg-Titlis Tourismus holds tribute events on Wednesdays to honour those guests who have been holidaying in Engelberg for 10, 15, 20, 25 years or more. Engelberg’s Tal Muse- um provides the appropriate setting for these celebrations. Registration for the tribute events must be made through the manager of your holiday accommodation and submitted to the Tourist Center by the Friday of the preceding week. Registration forms are also available from the Center. What is that makes someo- ne want to spend their holidays in Engelberg not just once, but again and again? Hotel Waldegg is welcoming guests with some exciting new fea- tures. Following the renovation of 30 rooms in November 2012 and 2013, the hotel invested in two new restaurants: the homely Jacquart Fonduestübli and the impressive Panoramares- taurant Waldegg. Head chef Marcel Syfrig places great importance on fresh and regional produce. On re- quest, he is happy to create vegan, lactose-free and gluten-free dishes. Guests at Hotel Waldegg can now charge their electric vehicles at no cost at the hotel’s own char- ging point. Here, you can refuel sustainably thanks to the 100 per- cent green electricity provided by the Obwalden utility company. All those who want to impro- ve their fitness can make use of the hotel’s renovated gym. The 40 m² gym has plenty of natural light and features equipment such as a spin bike, cross trainer, rowing machine, exercise bike, dumbbells, trampoli- ne, gymnastics ball and wall bar. The hotel gym is now also open to non- guests. Day passes can be purchased with or without access to the pool.

Engelberg always strikes the right chord when it comes to live music, ensuring there is something for every taste. Throughout July and August, local musicians will perform every Thursday in the Kurpark – or in the Kursaal in bad weather. From 8 p.m. onwards, visitors will be treated to either a folk music concert with Alpine horns, yodelling, cow bells and performances by children in traditional dress, or a performance by the Engelberg Music Society. Admission to the concerts is free. Do you prefer saxophones, trumpets, soulful vocals and rhyth- mic drums? Then you’ll love our Jazz in der Dorfstrasse event. Every Fri- day evening from 3 July to 7 August, various jazz bands will provide free outdoor concerts in front of a number of restaurants between 5 and 7 p.m. In- formation on these and other concerts can be found at www.engelberg.ch. Schlager fans should head to Ristis in August for the Alpine Schlager Festival. On 22, 23 and 28 to 30 August, this popular festival will treat visitors to performances from acts including ChueLee, Alpenland- Sepp & Co., Die Jungen Zillertaler and Markus Wolfahrt. Engelberg also has plenty to de- light classical music fans. The classical season kicks off on 17 May with two great concerts as part of the Zaubersee festival. The choral concert Georgi- sche Polyphonie will take place in Engelberg’s Abbey church at 2:30 p.m.; admission is free. At 5:30 p.m. the same day, pianist Kun Woo Paik will de- light listeners in the Abbey’s Baroque Hall. For more information on the programme visit www.zaubersee.ch. The erstKlassik am Sarnersee festival is also coming to Engelberg. A concert in the Abbey’s Baroque Hall at 8 p.m. on 29 August will feature music from 1815 as one of numerous events marking 200 years of Engelberg in Ob- walden. For more information and to buy tickets, visit www.erstklassik.ch. At 8 p.m. every Wednes- day from 8 July to 5 August, an organ concert will be held in the Abbey church. Admission is free; there will be a collection. The long summer of classical music will come to a close with the new Zwischentöne chamber music festival, which runs from 23 to 25 Octo- ber and features five concerts and two special events held in the Kursaal, the Baroque Hall, and the Abbey church.
