2018 AtlantiCare Foundation

AtlantiCare is building the area’s most advanced and comprehensive healthcare system – responding to the community’s ever-changing needs with facilities, services and unparalleled expertise. And your enthusiastic generosity makes it all possible. In fiscal year 2018, your gifts raised $1.87 million for the Foundation’s 40th Anniversary Campaign. That contributed to a campaign total of $2.13 million, exceeding our goal of $1.6 million. Your gifts are funding our vision for a healthier future – and making a real difference, right now. We are advancing cutting-edge cancer fighting technology at the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute with a new radiation therapy linear accelerator, thanks in part to $400,000 in contributions, including a lead gift of $100,000 from the Ruth an additional $225,000 grant from the Nicholson Foundation, we are expanding Behavioral Health services – taking aim at opioid abuse to rebuild families and save lives. And you are fostering the health and wellbeing of our shared community through our Pantry at the Plex program. Focused on solutions to social determinants of health, this important initiative this fiscal year distributed more than 177,000 pounds of healthy food to more than 1,000 adults and children in Atlantic City. I trust you are as proud of your accomplishments as we are. Many organizations are worthy of your support. On behalf of the entire AtlantiCare family, I thank you for putting your trust in us. Together, we will keep making health care history. Newman Shapiro Cancer & Heart Fund. With $120,000 in Foundation funds and

A lot has changed since AtlantiCare Foundation’s 1977 launch. We’ve seen growth transform sleepy main street towns into busy, bustling communities, with new schools, businesses, industries and families – all that make southern New Jersey such a vital and dynamic place. One thing hasn’t changed: AtlantiCare Foundation’s commitment to fund the best possible healthcare to support that growth, right here at home. For over four decades, the Foundation has teamed with AtlantiCare’s visionary leaders to expand programs, build new facilities and bring convenient access to clinical expertise to every corner of New Jersey’s southernmost counties. AtlantiCare builds the vision. The Foundation provides the financial fuel to bring it into focus. Your support makes it all possible. Today’s Foundation board members and leadership stand on the shoulders of greats, the selfless men and women who set the stage for 40 years of success. To my fellow board members and to every altruistic donor, I offer heartfelt thanks. We’re proud of the accomplishments outlined in this report. We know the future holds even greater triumphs, thanks to your continued support.

AtlantiCare celebrated 40 years at the Foundation’s campaign kick-off event on July 27, 2017 at Stockton Seaview Hotel & Golf with close to 150 in attendance. Stanley Grossman (pictured here) was part of the initial efforts to establish the Foundation. With his guidance and support the necessary funds were generated to keep the hospital operations going and to advance the organization.

THE ATLANTICARE FOUNDATION E S TA B L I S H E D 1 9 7 7

The AtlantiCare Foundation, then called the Atlantic City Medical Center Foundation was created to support the growth of the organization through community engagement and fundraising efforts. Since then, the AtlantiCare Foundation has spearheaded many campaigns and launched several projects to offer new services, expand encouraging practices, and foster innovations in healthcare at a local level. The AtlantiCare Foundation didn’t stop there, it also enabled the medical center to respond to barriers in the community that impacted health, and over the years has been dedicated to improving the health status of residents in southeastern New Jersey. Today, the Foundation continues to exist to support the evolution of AtlantiCare and the community it is proud to serve. We remain steadfast to the commitment our founding trustees set out to achieve 40 years ago, and work daily to enable AtlantiCare to achieve its vision of building healthy communities together by enabling one life-changing moment at a time.

Michael Charlton, Chairman of the Board of Directors, AtlantiCare Health System; Lori Herndon, President & CEO, AtlantiCare; Stanley Grossman, former Chairman of the Board of Directors, AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center; Samantha Kiley, Executive Director, AtlantiCare Foundation; Joan Brennan, Senior VP Quality & Performance Excellence, AtlantiCare.

The 40th Anniversary Campaign is a celebration of the AtlantiCare Foundation’s Anniversary, paying homage to our founders, while investing in our community’s future. We would like to thank and acknowledge the following donors who made a generous donation to the AtlantiCare Foundation 40th Anniversary Funding Initiatives as of July 1, 2018 recognized at their cash value or full pledge amount . For the Harrison family, supporting AtlantiCare has been a way of life , going on three generations. But their decision to make a major gift to the Heart Institute had its genesis in a crisis. In 2016, Ruthie Harrison of Margate came to the hospital with an infection which rapidly spread through her entire body. That led to a lack of oxygen to her heart, which required a pacemaker. It wasn’t enough – eventually the sepsis put her into heart failure that led to open heart surgery. As with any life-threatening health emergency, things rapidly turned upside down for the family. “You get that call at 2 o’clock in the morning and your mind starts racing,” said Brett Matik, Ruthie’s daughter, who lives in Linwood. “The fact that I could jump in the car and be at her side in just 12 minutes was a real blessing. That would not have been possible if she had been out of state,” she said. For the Harrisons, access to life-saving cardiac care came in the form of Ruthie’s cardiologist, Haitham R. Dib, MD; her surgeon, Howard I. Axelrod, MD and a large team of specialized nurses, technologists and other clinical professionals. Fortunately, their efforts saved her. Two years later, Ruthie is doing very well. As a trained registered nurse, Ruthie knows firsthand how important getting treatment quickly can be. “In that situation, every second counts. We are very fortunate to have the best physicians right here in our backyard,” she said. From that first dreaded 2 a.m. call to post-operative care and on to cardiovascular rehab, having Ruthie and her care team just minutes away made a difficult time a lot less difficult. Being so close to home, the Harrisons could schedule resources to have

a family member by her side 24-7, all while continuing to manage their families and business. With her brother, Dean Harrison, Brett runs the business her father Larry established decades ago, Harrison Beverage, the Atlantic City-area Anheuser-Busch beer distributor. And they are both parents, keeping tabs on busy families. “We basically lived in the ICU and the staff could not have been more accommodating,” Brett said. For the Harrisons, AtlantiCare brings the best of both worlds: the finest health care team available, made up of folks you know and trust from school, sports, work and the neighborhood. “It’s a world-class regional health system where you feel like part of the family, not just a patient,” Brett said. The Harrisons have always supported AtlantiCare, both financially and with volunteer hours. They have participated in special events and chaired the Gala. Brett is a board member, as her father was for years when she was a child. As children, she and her brother witnessed their parents’ support and they are raising their own children with similar values. “Beyond each individual’s needs, I believe great healthcare is essential to a strong community. Whether it’s heart or lung care, surgery, childbirth – in AtlantiCare, we have the full package, all those components, locally. When you’re here, you feel like you’re at home,” Brett said. Ruthie couldn’t agree more. “It’s very important to support your local hospital and foundation. You never know what’s going to happen to you, so you need the best care available, where you live. The care I received was superb, across the board. We’re very grateful,” Ruthie said.

Why I Gave… “Our ultimate goal is to make integrated care ‘the new normal’ throughout the state of New Jersey. Our intention is to continue supporting the expansion of the Cherokee model (an integrated, team-based approach to patient care embedding a behavioral health consultant within a primary care team to address patients’ behavioral and physical health issues) to more clinics in the future, thereby transforming the way care is delivered to vulnerable populations in New Jersey.” Mr. Arturo Brito, Executive Director, The Nicholson Foundation Behavioral Health Supporter

tools, technology and resources they need to be even more effective. “It’s an ongoing struggle. But we don’t give up,” psychiatrist Dr. Mohammad Ashfaq said. “We are increasing time spent with patients. We are investing in facilities and technology. We are building a true multi-disciplinary approach, recruiting specialists from all areas of expertise to address the complex medical, psychological and social services this population needs most. It’s expanding very fast,” he said. That expansion includes integration of behavioral health into primary care services; screening for depression and suicide; adding recovery specialists to our emergency rooms; and the opening of a new Outpatient Detox Center in Hammonton. Throughout the process, education is key to remove the many barriers to care. Mental health continues to carry a stigma that can discourage patients from reaching out. Those without insurance sometimes think they cannot get help. “With the right resources, we’ll have fewer people suffering, running away or not coming for lack of insurance or any other reason. That’s the goal,” Dr. Ashfaq said.

AtlantiCare has built the region’s most comprehensive behavioral and mental health services – but the need for increased and more specialized care continues to grow. Thanks in part to the generous donations frommembers of the Behavioral Health team, AtlantiCare has embarked on key initiatives to expand services, with a specific focus on opioid abuse and suicide. At the front lines of mental illness in the community, these AtlantiCare providers bring hope to those in despair, with cutting-edge medical and behavioral treatment and evidence-based counseling and education to help victims discover newways to manage their illness. “So many issues arise frommental health problems,” psychiatrist Dr. Stephanie Snead Poellnitz said. “Homelessness, abuse, unemployment and under-employment. Families are affected, sometimes with physical trauma if the patient becomes violent. At a minimum, families face psychological trauma, especially for children,” she said. Mental health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s one component of a complex galaxy of needs. The most successful interventions

To these forward-thinking medical professionals, supporting the Foundation just makes sense. Dr. Snead Poellnitz said the impact can be felt far and wide. “This is our community. We all need to be more invested, because ultimately it affects all of us, on many levels – crime, vandalism, unemployment, homelessness. This is a way to give back,” she said. Dr. Ashfaq cites spreading light as a frequent metaphor. “Most of us are blessed in so many ways. We can make a difference, one day at a time. Why not spread the light and help those who are suffering? They deserve the most and have the least,” he said.

integrate resources for the whole patient and community – medical, psychological and social. Mental illness can mask legitimate medical problems. It can also lead to addiction. At its worst, it can even drive victims to suicide. Besides the individual patient, families and other loved ones feel the impact, too. They need coping support. Throughout southern New Jersey, mental health professionals are working hard to break the cycle. On November 16, 2017 close to 100 friends, family, colleagues, medical residents and AtlantiCare leaders gathered at the William L. Gormley HealthPlex in Atlantic City to honor the late Dr. Victor Bressler during a ceremony memorializing his dedication and loyalty to AtlantiCare. To commemorate his legacy, the medical sta pledged $150,000 to the AtlantiCare Foundation to establish the Dr. Victor Bressler Memorial Fund. The fund will be used to support a program that will pair a medical resident with a local older adult from Atlantic City to create an opportunity to have “a long conversation” and reinforce the importance of the provider-patient/caregiver relationship Victor so often promoted.

While financial contributions have an important impact on our ability to deliver the highest quality health and healing to southeastern New Jersey, giving of time and talents expand our ability to show that we care during some of life’s most fragile moments. We thank those that have participated in the inaugural year for the AtlantiCare Foundation’s Days of Service program.
