COURSE DESCRIPTION
NURSING PROCESS (0) An evaluation of previous education and experience to determine academic credit. Prerequi– site to nursing major. NURSING SCIENCE I (6) The first professional course introducing the student to the concepts of professional identity, accountability and responsibility, foundations of professional nursing; issues and trends influ– encing the profession. Exploration of theories of homeodynamics and their implications for health sustenance of individuals along the life continuum. Study of man's adaptive mechanisms in a milieu of internal and external change. Inquiry in theoretical and empirical bases for initiating nursing interventions to promote appropriate health maintenance adaptions throughout the life span. (9) The second course in the professional major. Focus on family centered nursing, study of family dynamics and influence of culture on roles of individuals in family health practices. Identification of principles of nursing and development of the nursing process in integration of knowledge for design of significant nursing practices required by individuals and families. Development of skills and abilities needed for the professional nurse to function as a primary care agent in the health care delivery. Theoretical ·and clinical development in nursing assess– ment; emphasis on synthesis and integration of theories of nursing for direct application in increasingly complex and diverse health care situations. NURSING SCIENCE Ill (9) The third professional course. Emphasis on the community and its health needs. Assess– ment of community health resources, problems; epidemiological basis of health and disease; natural history of disease; care of the ill at home; roles and responsibilities of the professional nurse in the community; clinical practice in community health settings. Practice in physical assessment skills under the guidance of a preceptor. NURSING SCIENCE IV (9) The final course in the professional major. Stress on critical inquiry, clinical management of groups of clients; development of leadership skills; design of independent study. NURSING SCIENCE II

A course designed to enable the health professional to communicate in Spanish. It includes the essentials of Spanish pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and the expressions needed to understand and to make oneself understood by the Spanish speaking client in interviews, diagnosis, and professional conversations.
