Congratulations on your internship with Adobe! We are so excited you will be joining us soon. Washington, DC is an amazing and diverse community with tons of activities to do and places to see. There are so many perks to living in the heart of Washington, DC – access to new people, culture, food and technology but with that comes the challenge of finding affordable housing. Rental home and apartment prices tend to be high in Washington, DC, so we recommend finding a roommate/housemate to split the cost of housing and utilities. Figure out where you want to live and get started on the search as early as you can. We have compiled some information together for you to help get you oriented with your internship location. What to know about renting in Washington, DC Many people who work in DC actually live in the surrounding states of Virginia and Maryland. Downtown DC is a landlord’s market, and higher prices are more prevalent during the beginning of the year when there is a lower inventory. Proximity to the METRO, DC’s rapid transit system, also affects rental rates and availability. Different areas of DC are referred to as being either inside or outside “The Beltway”, which is a highway that encircles the city. Although housing in downtown neighborhoods – such as Georgetown and DuPont Circle – tends to be more expensive and less available than housing in the suburbs, inside the Beltway communities like McLean, VA and Bethesda/Chevy Chase, MD, with their highly-ranked school systems, are pricey as well. Being located outside the Beltway, housing is typically more available and less expensive. Outside the Beltway, towns include Oakton, Reston, and Vienna, VA, and Potomac, MD.

Popular Neighborhoods

MCLEAN, VA There are many new apartments and condominiums in the area, attracting mostly young professionals with no children. With the new Silver Line Metro stop right in the middle of two malls with new retail and grocery shopping, it's a prime location for the many moving into the area. Most homes in McLean are single-family residences that are very traditional and often postmodern architecture. Many of the apartments available in McLean are new high-rises with a few townhouses and condominiums. BETHESDA, MD From plenty of retail establishments, Bethesda is vibrant and offers neighborhood respite. Many businesses settled here because of metro access. Though mostly young professionals and young families with children, there are many neighborhoods, houses, and apartment buildings, and townhouses. You can walk to stores, entertainment, and transportation from most neighborhoods in Bethesda within 15 minutes, making this area enticing to residents. Homes in Bethesda are often very traditional and simple, with clean lines and stonewalls. Over the years, many homes have included additions remodels to create the mix of homes you see today. Bethesda is also home to quite a few apartment complexes. VIENNA, VA Located in Fairfax County, Virginia, Vienna has been on the "100 Best Places to Live" list by Time Magazine. This should give you an idea of how well- rounded this area is. This area consists of 15,000+ residents with easy access to transportation, roads, restaurants, and entertainment venues for all ages. Vienna includes great schooling, Wolf Trap and Tysons shopping, and constant activity of nearby DC. Vienna is a great place for families because it is close to the city of DC, but the homes have nice yards for kids to play in. Typically houses in the city are fairly new with most between the ages of 15-30 years old. GAITHERSBURG, MD With roughly 67,000 residents, the City of Gaithersburg is one of the largest cities in Maryland, located northwest of D.C. in Montgomery County. It is divided into east and west sections, separated by Interstate 270. The eastern section of the city is older and is the original portion of the town before more recent growth. The western side has undergone significant urbanization, with several newer developments including the Kentland’s and Lakelands communities. Outside Beltway Suburbs

Leasing a Property

- In a competitive rental market, bring a completed rental application - including all necessary documentation - and a check for security deposit when visiting the property - Ask if the landlord offers any favorable terms for your employer - Come prepared with enough funds to pay for the first month of rent, plus the deposit amount. Deposit requirements vary, but can be equal to one-month rent (or more) - Be extra diligent when reviewing the lease from a private landlord. Unlike large apartment complexes, which generally have well established agreements, private landlords may be less experienced and may include unfavorable or unrealistic clauses - Ask a family member, friend, or colleague to come along with you on the move-in inspection to have an extra set of eyes

TRANSPORTATION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority provides transportation options for Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. This includes a bus and metro system. Complete information can be found by clicking the link above, including fares, schedules, parking, and information about the SmarTrip® card. Trains D.C.’s metro system, Metrorail , is one of the busiest in the United States, servicing more than 600,000 customers a day throughout the area. It offers an affordable, safe, and efficient way to travel around the city and surrounding states. The Metrorail system has six rail lines: Red, Orange, Silver, Blue, Yellow, and Green. You can use the Trip Planner to work out transfers and fares: www.wmata.com/schedules/trip-planner/index.cfm . Buses Metrobus is one of the largest and busiest in the country, with more than 1,500 buses operating at any given time. The company services the area in and around the District of Columbia, including Maryland and Virginia. Bus operators do not carry cash so be sure to have your pass or exact change when you board. Various money saving passes and discounts are available. Paratransit service is also offered. Commute Alternatives The Commuter Alternatives Program helps you find inexpensive, stress-free and environmentally-friendly ways to get to work. HOSPITALS AND EMERGENCY SERVICES Numerous hospitals and emergency care centers serve Washington, DC and its surrounding suburbs. From large, public clinics, to smaller establishments, care is never out of reach in Washington, DC. These medical centers include: - MedStar Georgetown University Hospital - Mary Washington Hospital - Inova Fairfax Hospital - MedStar Washington Hospital Center Urgent Care Facilities For urgent, but not life-threatening, medical concerns that occur after-hours, or cannot wait for an appointment with a regular physician, urgent care centers can be found throughout the area: - GW Immediate & Primary Care - McPherson Square - Doctors to You – Home Service Many urgent care centers are open from the early morning until late in the evening during the week, and also maintain weekend and holiday hours. Just as with a visit to the doctor, an urgent care center will always need your insurance information. Although the staff will file a claim to receive payment from your health insurance provider, a co-pay may apply at the time of treatment. SHOPPING Shopping in the Washington DC area offers a fantastic overall experience, even if you are not buying anything. These malls and shopping centers are just some of what Washington, DC has to offer. This traditional style shopping center is one of the largest malls in the United States so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. This mall offers over 300 shops, restaurants and a movie theater so it can easily turn into a full-day occasion. A lot of shopping can be done at Tysons Corner Center so the mall offers same day delivery with a $5 charge to help convenience the shopper’s commute back home.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS

Union Station www.unionstationdc.com

Union Station is one of Washington DC’s most popular tourist sites. This aesthetically-pleasing train station not only hosts daily trains and buses but holds over 100 unique shops and restaurants, along with a movie theater, making for a great destination stop for people visiting or residing in the DC area. Washington Monument www.nps.gov/wamo/index.htm The Washington Monument can be seen from the National Mall and stands in honor of the first president, George Washington. It stands at 555 feet tall, allowing visitors to see views 30 miles away once at the top. No other building in DC is allowed to be taller than the Washington Monument. The U.S. Capitol www.visitthecapitol.gov The United States Capitol is the original meeting place of the nation’s legislature and is a symbol of the American people and their government. Visiting the U.S. Capitol is an office building but is also a popular tourist destination for people visiting the DC area. The U.S. Capitol holds collections of important American art and architectural achievements. Library of Congress www.loc.gov Founded in 1800, the Library of Congress is the oldest federal cultural institution in the nation, is known for its research library that services the U.S. Congress and national library. This library houses over 167 million historic items across 838 miles of bookshelves. Visitors are able to tour the Supreme Court and attend lectures to learn about the court and history of the building. Monday–Wednesday during the months of October–April, people who arrive early can gain a spot to watch a case being argued free of charge. Georgetown and the Waterfront www.nps.gov/places/georgetown-waterfront-park.htm This is very well known area, housing some of the most expensive real estate in DC, people venture to Georgetown to see the aesthetically pleasing area. Make the most out the location by paddling the Potomac, walk by The Washington Harbour, bike along the river, or eat at one of the many restaurants found in Georgetown. National Cathedral https://cathedral.org Known for its Gothic-style Cathedral is an architectural work of art and a must see building in DC. The cathedral has more than 200 strained-glass windows, 200 gargoyles and grotesques, along with wood carvings, mosaics and artistic metal work.
