LEARN TO SKATE Ice skating is a great way to have fun, stay fit and make new friends. The Learn to Skate Program offers skill progressions designed to enhance the capabilities of each skater. Shakopee offers basic skating instruction through advanced figure skating beginning at age 3 through adults. Classes meet once per week for 30 minutes. Class placement is

preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice. Helmets are highly recommended for all beginners (bicycle helmets acceptable). Basic Skills This program will introduce the basic skill moves that are the fundamentals of the sport: forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns and mohawks. Upon completion of the basic levels, skaters will have a basic knowledge of the sport, enabling them to advance to more specialized areas of skating. Hockey Skills The curriculum teaches the fundamentals of hockey skating. Skaters will learn how to maneuver faster and be more agile on the ice. Necessary equipment: hockey skates, certified hockey helmet (ice approved) and hockey gloves (optional). Classes are strictly skating; no stick handling. Free Skate This is the point where the skater can choose whether to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to the sport of figure skating. Adult Primary focus is to develop forward and backward skating, gliding, stopping and introduce crossovers. Advances adult classes also available.

• Protective headgear is recommended for all children under the age of 6 and must be provided by the participant. • Class attire: Skaters should wear warm, comfortable clothing. We suggest dressing in layers so jackets or sweaters may be removed as the skaters warm up. Mittens or gloves are a must! No tight jeans; they restrict movement. • Please make sure that your skate blades are sharp and your boots fit properly. Skates should be sharpened before first class. • Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled class. • Classes may be combined or canceled if minimums are not met. • Skates may be rented for $5 a class. New arena pro shop opens April 1 Beginning April 1, EdgeTek Hockey will open a new full-service pro shop at the Shakopee Ice Arena, offering professional skate sharpening and repair, a broader range of high-quality hockey and figure skating products and apparel products and services. Previously purchased punch cards for skate sharpening will no longer be accepted after April 1, 2020. Please use your punch cards by March 31. EdgeTek will offer customers with remaining punches on their previously purchased cards will receive a one-time discount of 15-percent off their first EdgeTek Hockey sharpening card.
