Toreros Ready to Challenge During Millennium Curtain Call

San Diego women's basketball enters the last season of the 21 s t century hoping to build on the foundation of success laid in the previous two seasons . 1999-2000 promises continued transitions from a team who has improved on their overall and West Coast Conference record in each of the last three seasons. Now, the Toreros prepare for their final campaign in the USD Sports Center and anx iously anticipate the completion of the new Jenny Craig Pavilion scheduled to open for the 2000-200 I season. USD, with a 14-13 overall record, posted their first winning season si nce 1992-93 when the Toreros qualified for their only trip to the NCAA Tournament. San Diego tied for fourth in the WCC race with a 7-7 mark - their first upper– divi sion finish si nce 1994-95. Three starters and 10 letter– winners return for head coach Kathy Marpe, who prepares for her 20 th season patrolling the sidelines for the Toreros, her 26 th season in collegiate coaching.

Seniors 1-r: Jessica Gray, Maria Perez-Barris, Susie Erpelding, Andrea Burns.

USD welcomes back three of five top scorers from last season, headlined by a pair of All-WCC First Team members, senior guard Susie Erpelding (San Diego, CA) and senior forward Jessica Gray (Redwood City, CA). Erpelding and Gray were the first USD teammates to earn all-conference honors since 1990-91 and finished one, two in the scoring race with Erpelding averaging 14.0 points per game and Gray at a 12.2 clip. Senior forward, Maria Perez-Barris (Barcelona, Spain), returns after posting a solid season after transferring from Solano Coll ege and averaged 5.8 points per outing as the Torero's first player off the bench last year. USO took full advantage of all trips to the charity stripe in 1998-99 and ranked second as a team in overall free throw percentage in 1998-99 at .715, and improved their average in league games converting at a .728 clip. The Toreros were led by Erpelding, who finished second in the WCC in free throw accuracy at .860, and ranked 14 th nationally among Division I leaders. San Diego's stingy defense prevented opponents from lighting up the scoreboard last season. The Toreros allowed just 58 .5 points per game to lead the West Coast Conference in team defense in overall games and ranked 14 th in all of Division I. USD was equally sti ngy during league play and ranked second in WCC contests allowing league foes a paltry 59.9 points per game. The Torero defense ranked second in the WCC in overall steals in 1998- 99, averaging 8.7 an outing. USO was also successfu l in blocking out, holding opponents to just 33.3 boards per game - the fewest in the conference. Gray returns as the Toreros leading rebounder and was the first Torero post player since Chris Enger to rank in the top ten in overall scoring and rebounding during a season.· Head coach Kathy Marpe is understandably eager to get the new season underway with such a talented cast of returners and an infusion of size in the post and speed and scoring on the perimeter. "We have a lot more depth at key positions this season," stated

Marpe, who feels team defense will con tinue to be a strength, but certainly not at the expense of the offense. "Our inside presence with Jess ica (Gray) and consistent leadership from Susie (Erpelding) are the best combinations of both we've had since Chris Enger and Angie Straub. We ' re smarter and more experienced in all areas . This season we ' ll be more consistent scoring because we can attack and score in a variety of ways." Depth comes from a group of newcomers with impressive credenti als. Freshman Kerri Nakamoto (San Jose , CA) led Archbishop Mitty High School to a state championship and an undefeated 31 -0 record as a senior and will likely start next to sophomore Melissa Glazebrook (Mountai n View, CA) who was a teammate of Nakamoto's for three years at Mitty. Erin Mali ch (Mason, OH) adds a physical inside presence, while Jen Wedo (Downingtown, PA) provides USD with one of the purest shooters the Toreros have had in recent memory, according to Marpe. "Our defense was always consistent last year, but our offense was up and down . The biggest key for us this year is our ability to score. I think we're on track to keep going up. I'd like to think we can challenge for the conference race," Marpe said.

Torero Head Coach Kathy Marpe

20th season

An Elite G1•oup of Coaches

University of San Diego head women 's basketball coach Kathy Marpe joined an elite group of coaches last season when the Toreros downed Portland State Uni– versity, for her elusive 300th career collegiate coach– ing victory. With the win, Marpe joins a select group of about 60 active coaches who have surpassed the 300 career victory plateau .

1998-99 was another year of successful transition for Coach Marpe and the Toreros. San Diego proved its mettle in posting a 6-1 West Coast Conference record in the USO Sports Center, including a 3-0 record against post-season qualifiers Pepperdine, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara. Now, poi sed on the close of the 20th Century and the dawn of a new millennium, Marpe looks to guide USO women's basketball to the top of the conference standings and make a much anticipated return to the post season.

The Seci-ets to Mai-pe's Successful 20 Yea1·s at USO Coach Marpe begins her 27th year as a collegiate head coach and her 20th patrolling the sidelines for the University of San Diego. The changes she has witnessed in the game of women's basketball and the skills and athleticism of today 's student-athletes, is nothing short of staggering. Adapting to the changing environment is key to building a winning program. Suc- cess through change permeates Marpe 's long and di stingui shed coaching career and, her 3 I2 career victories attest to her ability to flouri sh in a changing environment. Despite the myriad of changes in women's college basketball and the ever-increasing skills of the student-athletes who play them, Marpe 's success comes as a result of embracing - not resisting change. Her versatility was proven in 1998-99 when the Toreros posted their first winning campaign at 14-13 since 1992-93 and a fourth place showing in increasingly competitive WCC. Marpe relied on ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ a freshman point guard to run the Torero offense and MARPE'S despite inexperience and injuries at key positions, arches- COtAlC H I NG FIT,.E trated USO to a 6-1 league mark at home - the second best "' record in the entire WCC. 1997-98 WCC Coach of the Yea1• USD's success in 1998-99 was a continuation of Conference Independent Rec. 9-5 7-1 I 9-8 5-8 8-5 9-4

Dean Ma1·pe As the "dean" of West Coast Conference coaches, Marpe possesses the necessary perspective to appreciate the radical changes in the league. During her tenure at Alcala Park , Marpe has twice won WCC Coach of the Year honors . She shared the award in 1993 after leading the Toreros into the NCAA Tournament for the first and on ly time in school history - upsetting Santa Clara in the WCC Tournament Championship. Marpe won the award in 1997-98 after leading her team to one of the largest single-season turn– arounds in WCC history - an improvement of eight games. Last season, Marpe led the Toreros to home upset victories against #25 Santa Clara, Saint Mary 's, Pepperdine and an overtime win aga inst Portland. All four WCC foes slayed in the USO Sports Center, advanced to the post season. The victory against the Broncos was the Torero's first win against a Top-25 opponent since 1992-93. Excellence On and Off the Court Marpe is the active leader in career coaching victories with 225 at USO and ranks third among conference coaches in WCC wins (90). In 14 WCC seasons, Marpe has produced 15 All-WCC performers, 15 WCC All-Academic se lections and has placed four players on the WCC All-Freshman teams. In 1998-99, junior guard Susie Erpelding, became the first Torero women ' s basketball player to earn GTE/CoSIDA First Team All-Academic America honors.

Kathy Marpe, 1998,1993

West Coast Conference Coach of the Year

Prior to arriving at USO, Marpe directed the University of New Mexico to seven sea-

sons of success on and off the court. The Lobos were 51-30 in Marpe's last three seasons, having posted wins over two nationally-ranked teams in the same season. Playing in "The Pit" , the UNM women drew over 1,000 a game with crowds reaching the 2,000-3,000 mark on occasion - at–

tendance figures unheard of in the mid-70s . By the time she left the Albuquerque campus, Marpe had led the Lobos to consecutive finishes in the AP Top 20 and six AIAW Reg ional appearances in seven years. In the Be;:innin;: Marpe broke into the coaching ranks at Spring Lake (MN) Hi gh in 1971 after earning a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education at the University of Minnesota that same year. Along with heading women's basketball , Marpe served as the head coach for women's volleyball , softball and track. In three basketball seasons, her teams compi led a 53-1 record. Involve1nent The Minnesota nati ve strongly emphasizes com– munity involvement and has stressed it to every team she has ever coached. Marpe fee ls that "It is very important to remember who you are and where you come from, and also to give back to the people around you or to those who aren 't as fortunate." Marpe also has served as a voting member of the

USD Coaching Staff (1-r): Erik Johnson , Nadine Mastroleo, wkeysha Wright, Kathy Marpe.

AP Top 20 Poll , the Kodak Al l-American se lection board and the Western Regional seeding comm ittee. In 1990, she was a member of the gold medal-winning East coaching staff at the U.S. Olympic Festival. Kathy's family is also involved in the program. Her mother, Genevieve, assists in the basketball office keeping in touch with the Torero women 's basketball alumni and extended family. The Futu1·e After surpassi ng 300 career victories and working with a quality group of veteran returners and excitino newcom– ers on the ri se, Coach Marpe feels rejuvenated and excited for the upcoming season , her 20th year guiding the Torero hoops fortunes . "A couple years ago it would have really seemed like 20 years. Now, it's like, Wow! 20 again," Marpe said . Marpe credits much of her optimi sm and excitement to the youth and energy of her coaching staff and the enthu– siasm has been infectious. Oh, and the quality of her team also brings a smi le to her face. Added Marpe, "Thi s group of athletes is so pleasant to work with and hav ing young assistan ts brings new vigor." WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT COACH MARPE ...

"Kathy is one of the most conscientious, professional coaches in the game today. She has a great coaching ethic and love of women's basketball. Her teams are , year-in and year-out, the hardest working team we play against." - Jim Sollars, University of Portland

"Kathy has been a great contributor to the sport of women 's basketball. Over the years she has earned the respect of her peers because of her dedication , commitment and enthusiasm for the game. She is a credit to the University of San Diego and to the West Coast Conference." • Mary Hile-Nepfel, University of San Francisco "Kathy has made valuable contributions to the legacy of women's basketball at USO. Her basketball knowledge, personal integrity, and commitment to the concept of the student– athlete has earned her the respect of coaching peers and her players. She has always made the welfare of her players her number one priority. It has been a pleasure and challenge to compete against her teams, because she forces me to be at my best. Playing against USO has made me a better coach. Playing for USO has made their players better people ." - Bill Nepfel, University of San Francisco "I think Kathy epitomizes c!ass as a coach . Her teams are very well coached and are always over-achievers, the mark of a truly great coach. Kathy's players always play their hearts out for her. You can always tell how much a team respects their coach by how hard they play, and Kathy's kids play VERY hard . But the thing I like most about Kathy is that she is humble in victory and gracious in defeat. She does not know it, but I think I learned a lot from her on being a professional on this level. She is a great coach, and a very caring , sincere person . And it is always a pleasure playing her teams (although

As the "Dean of the WCC ," I am always seeking her input and perspective on aspects of the game and conference issues. Kathy has been very special to the Barney family as she gave my husband Michael his start in coaching and my son Jarryd another positive role model in his life. - Kellee Barney, Gonzaga University "I have great respect for Kathy. I think year in and year out she does a tremendous job with her team, especially in game preparation. A Trihu•e To Rollie ROLLffiMARPE TEACHE~ COACH, FATHE~ HUSBAND AND FRIEND OF TORERO WOMEN'S BASKETBALL r--------------, 'Ibrero Women's Baskeball lost a

dear friend with the passing of Rollie Marpe. A member of the USD coaching stafffor 12 seasons, he assisted his daugh– ter, head coach Kathy Marpe, in a multi– tude of roles. He demonstrated a remark– able passion for the game of basketball and a love for the athletes who played it. This entire m edia guide is dedi– cated to his memory and this page is a tribute from players and coaches, past and present, who knew, admired and loved Rollie. He will be sorely missed.

ROLAND "ROLLIE" MARPE 1925-1998

DAUGHTER AND FATHER KATHY & ROLLIE MARPE

REMEMBERING ROLLIE

Rollie was always fired up for practice. He'd be in the gym an hour before practice. You could always tell Rollie was in the gym because you 'd hear him practicing passing against the wall. "Ba-boom, Ba-boom." His competitiveness never went away. It broke his heart when we didn't play well. He was elated when players did well. He took it so personally, so it meant a lot to the players. USO basketball got him up in the morning. - Paula Mascari-Bott, 1990 West Coast Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year

Rollie and Kathy were alike in many ways. The day after a game, Rollie loved to come to the office and talk game strategy. If we won, he'd end up in Kathy's office. But if we lost, Kathy's door would be shut and he'd end up in my office. - Dr. Cheryl Getz, USO Assistant Women 's Basketball Coach, 1990-98 My free throws were atrocious as a freshman. Rollie always gave me advice and when I succeeded, he'd say, 'See, I told you so. "' Against SDSU in the Sports Arena as a freshman I lost my shooting shirt after the game and Rollie found the shirt and said , "Don 't worry, Chris. We'll take care of you. " - Chris Enger, All-West Coast Conference First Team, 1990, 1991 & 1993 I'll always remember seeing him there an hour before practice so we could get our extra shots done. - Kari Ambrose, All-West Coast Conference Academic Team, 1998-99 I WAS ABLE TO GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO BE A PART OF MY LIFE AND GIVE HIM THE OPPOR:nJNTIY TO SHARE MY DREAMS AND PASSIONS. THE THING HE WANTED TO DO MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, WAS TO BE A COACH. I FEEL SO FORTUNATE TO HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GIVE HIM THE OP– POR:nJNTIY TO LIVE HIS DREAM. HIS 12 YEARS HELPING HERE WERE THE HAPPIEST OF HIS LIFE.

Rollie always seemed to let the horn go off when

coach was getting serious. Was it accidental or not ?

He always had good insights and I loved to talk bas–
