CITY CIRCUS A WORLD OF CURIOSITIES

get fab this fall with Babe sta Beat!

L ike a flash , it’s back to the books! The summer season’s gone and now it’s time to get serious. Serious about your fall fashion cred, culture vulture weekends and looking ahead to the holidays, from Halloween to Hanukkah, Thanksgiving to Christmas. We’ve got a lot on our radar this season in the city: everything from a new exhibit at FIT featuring the color pink to a VR wonderland in midtown. Be sure to check out our guide to fall fun in Around Town . This season is all about attitude. We were thrilled to work with amazing photog, Yvette Velasquez, who brought to life both a punk paradise in The Great Rock ‘N’ Roll Swindle , and a circus of curiosities in Le Freak C’est Chic . The kids had a blast ‘getting into character’ —whether that meant to show off hair so spiked it would make Sid Vicious jealous, some fantastic gymnastic skills, or to be lightly sat upon and lend one’s legs for the sake of an illusion. These are some amazing fashion stories! The idea of ‘story’ is more important than ever in fashion, and we got to delve deep into one of our faves: we learned everything we could about Berlin-based Noé & Zoë , including the concept of fernweh . To take it even further, we opened a new chapter in the mag with the inaugural section, “What’s the Story,” detailing the inspiration behind a host of fall’s finest brands in fashion. Not only clothes, of course, accessories abound in the fall/winter (it’s a season of satchels)! We would have been remiss to not show off some of the coolest carryalls we’ve seen, from Skip Hop to State Bags. To get serious for a moment, we were happy to come across a new book by lawyer Shannon McNulty, walking city parents through the ins and outs of legal planning. It’s an important thing to think about, even more-so when you add kids to the mix. We interviewed the author, and will be offering the guide in the shop to help our city families get their i’s dotted and t’s crossed when it comes to their family affairs. All this and so much more! We hope you love the issue—officially our 5th year of producing Babesta Beat! Thank you for reading and we’ll see you in the shop!

CHECK OUT | HOLOGRAPHIC STUDIOS Holograms are not just the stuff of Star Trek fantasy. At Holographic Studios, an off-the-beaten-path museum in NYC, exhibits are dedicated to the holographic arts, certain to entertain and confound. See images that jump right out of the hologram, celebrity portraits like those of Andy Warhol and Isaac Asimov, and sculptures you would swear were real. The surreal art, with images formed by light beams from a laser, definitely have an oddball cool factor that kids will enjoy. Located in midtown Manhattan in a former blacksmith’s forge, the gallery is free to the public and open weekdays 2pm-6pm, though there’s a tour available for $30 where you can see even more. holographer.com.

AroundTown The leaves are changing and a new school year begins! Re-commit to take advantage of all that the city and its surrounds offers! Grab a calendar and plan your museum visits, Broadway shows and quick trips. Here’s what caught our eye this season! THINK PINK | MUSEUM AT FIT Pink: The History of a Pink, Pretty, Powerful Color , running September 7, 2018- January 5, 2019 at the Museum at FIT, explores what has been called the most divisive of colors. The exhibit features approximately 80 ensembles from couture royalty spanning from Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent, to Jeremy Scott of Moschino and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons. Although the color has oft been a symbol of extreme femininity in the United States, the exhibit demonstrates it wasn’t always so, as it juxtaposes the blush color in both men’s and women’s clothing in many different eras from all over the world, including India, Africa, Mexico and Japan. The exhibit follows the historical and cultural contexts that color this hue, remaining at once pretty as it is powerful. September 7, 2018—January 5, 2019, Museum at FIT.

MUST SEE | KINGKONGON BROADWAY The supersized ape will swing over to the Broadway Theater this fall, to tell the familiar ‘beauty and the beast’ love story in a new way. Based on the 1932 novel, the contemporary take on the story of Ann Darrow (Christiani Pitts), filmmaker Carl Denham (Eric WilliamMorris) and Kong blends pure Broadway stagecraft with a mix of robotics and puppetry. Screenwriter and playwright Jack Thorne notes, “This is an epic story but also a really intimate one—about the limits of ambition and the cages we’re put in.” Previews start October 5, 2018; Opens November 8.

MUSEUM TIME | ANDY WARHOL—FROM A TO B AND BACK AGAIN There’s no artist more iconically American as AndyWarhol. His fixation on celebrity and consumer culture is well documented in his most known work, from the bright redCampbell’s Soup cans and green glass Coca Cola bottles to his bright colored negatives of MarilynMonroe. TheWhitneyMuseum’s new exhibit, AndyWarhol — fromA to B and Back Again , opening this November will be the first comprehensive retrospective of the artist since 1989. The exhibit takes viewers through the different eras ofWarhol to reveal new complexities of the cultural phenombest known for his indeliblemark on Pop Art. Viewers may explore his commercial illustration of the 50s, experimental filmof the 70s and painterly abstraction of the 80s. For the artist that famously quipped “art is what you can get away with,” he’s succeeded in ‘getting away’ with some of themost recognized works in history. NICI ZINELL, THE DESIGNER BEHIND THE BERLIN-BASED COLLECTION TELLS US HER STORY, HER INSPIRATIONS AND WHAT SHE LOOKS FORWARD TO FOR AW18. Noé&Zoë chatting with

F ernweh is the short answer for the inspiration behind Berlin-based brand Noé & Zoë for this fall/winter season. For those who don’t speak German, that translates to “an ache for distant places; the craving for travel.” If you have jetsetting, wayfinding or pond-hopping in your heart, this collection hits all the right notes. Says designer Nici Zinell, it consists of “bold primaries mixed with lovely pastels and irregular spots of blush, lavender, cherry, emerald and cobalt.” All this is mixed with signature stars and stripes that brand aficionados look forward to each season. The multicultural inspiration is no surprise from Zinell who grew up in Austria, Germany, Morocco and the US. She says her mom worked as a costume designer and aunt owned two fashion retail shops, laying the groundwork for Zinell’s later fashion career (and for her “pretty wild” sense of style). “I was around clothes and fashion all the time,” she says. Zinell studied fashion design and went on to follow her mother’s footsteps as a costume designer and a stylist before launching her own childrenswear line. “It all started when I had been sewing toys and homewear for my second-born and people started asking if I could make them some too. As the requests increased it was the right moment to launch Noé & Zoë. My husband strongly encouraged me to try it, so I wouldn’t look back and think ‘what if. . .’”

What began as a small collection including bedding, playmats, toys and accessories with only a few clothes has turned into a robust fashion line—this season cool, trendy and unisex separates, trimmed with sporty details on easy to-wear cotton garments and mixed with boho-inspired styles. The idea, says Zinell, “was to mix urban life with traditional sailor pieces to create a cozy winter cabin feeling.” Looking back on the years she says the biggest challenge in developing the brand was the break up with her former partner and remains thankful that her family and the amazing team gave so much support at that time and helped her continue to build. “I couldn’t have done it alone.” Noé & Zoë has evolved over the years says Zinell in terms of the quality of fabrics, prints and manufacturing. “Moving our production to Portugal has been one of the best decisions,” she says. Zinell takes the most pride in how far the brand has come—it’s currently represented in 20 different countries and in 68 different retailers across the world. After over a decade designing Noé & Zoë, she sees the industry at-large now as overcrowded with copycat brands, though she admits she spots 2-3 new labels every year doing something fresh. Freshness is something that Zinell works hard on each season. From finding an inspiration, choosing fabrics and patterns and developing a rough outline to actual production, the process can take 3-6 months at a time. Her international childhood is top of mind when she designs the back-to-school collection for Noé & Zoë. Zinell recalls her own back-to school experience, namely in first grade at the French school she attended in Morocco sited in a beautiful old villa with a huge garden. “In the garden we’d have PE class where I’d be hiding in trees and playing football on a dusty square,” she says. Equal parts romantic, nostalgic and playful, it’s these memories—fleeting beautiful moments of freedom and fun— that are enough to give anyone fernweh . FAMILY MUSTS IN BERLIN “Do a city tour by boat on the spree, stop by the playground at Weinsberg Park on Kastanienallee or explore the Gleisdreieck Park. Visit Tempelhofer Feld, have ice cream at Hokey Pokey and dinner at Prater.” -Nici Zinell, Noé & Zoë

Everything you need to know before hitting the nursery. 101 nursery C hoosing your nursery furniture is one of the most exciting points of the journey leading up to baby! First you should figure out your crib and changing table, as these are the ‘anchors’ for the room. Generally, designers offer companion pieces so that whites and woods match perfectly. (But that doesn’t mean that you have to keep them in sync, there are lots of options!) Besides a crib and changer, a glider is the other essential for a room. A new parent spends loads of time soothing and feeding the baby, so a comfy chair is a must-have. It can transition to a reading chair down the road. We love the modern furniture collections by Oeuf, Spot on Square, Bloom, Nurseryworks, Monte, Dutailier and Stokke, for instance, each giving their own style to a room. Here are some of our top tips to guide you through the process of building the perfect nursery. Downtown NYC where Babesta’s located is loft-land. The open floor plan living means you can see a good deal of the apartment from wherever you stand. (Not to mention, visitors often tour your whole pad, something they might not do in the suburbs where there might be an upstairs/downstairs). Therefore your style should sync up throughout the house. We normally see that a plain white or wood can fit the bill quite nicely with clean lines and simple design. Then you can “tell the story” of the room with other things, like artwork, bedding, wallpaper and décor. The alternative is letting the crib tell the story. Furniture company Nurseryworks does this well. Their standout cribs can be acrylic, coated with 24K gold or hand-carved into a beautiful natural shape reminiscent of the Oculus. Believe us: these are always spectacular and are worth a look if only to admire them like pieces of art. Talking cribs: Round or rectangular; plain vanilla or OMG!

Alma Papa, a slightly smaller crib that has its own custom mattress, and Stokke offers its ever-popular ovular crib the Sleepi, which can feel like a space-saver in a small room. Just keep in mind if you buck the “standard” crib size, you’ll need to get a custom-sized mattress and sheets throughout the life of the crib, as standard goods won’t fit snugly and properly.

Where’s it made & when can I get it?

You want to ensure that your dream nursery is made well by a reputable company and that this company can deliver the goods before baby’s arrival. Many ask where the furniture is made, preferring companies that manufacture in Europe or the United States. We love the Oeuf collection, as it is made in Europe of sustainable materials, and the designs are simple and modern. Spot on Square also manufactures in Europe, producing some beautiful cribs and dressers with an eye toward eco-friendliness. Other Babesta favorites Monte Design & Dutailier are made in Canada by family-owned companies. Monte is a whiz at gliders and beds (as well as other furniture!), and Dutailier makes some pretty cool cribs and dressers as well an array of uber comfortable recliners & gliders.

Size Matters

Most cribs are rectangular, as there is a rectangular “standard” crib mattress that fits nearly every crib sold in the US. Be sure you know that the crib you choose is “standard.” Most cribs from Spot on Square, Oeuf, and Dutailier are, but for instance, Bloom offers the

The question of when is an important one in the world of baby. The baby is on his own schedule, and furniture will have to comply (or else you’ll be stressed and you definitely don’t want that). We’ve seen a good rule of thumb is to choose furniture that is in stock and in the United States. If it’s not in the US then find out if it’s “on the water”. If it’s already en route to the US, you should have a pretty good gauge of arrival time but remember, customs works on its own schedule and things can get stuck! It’s always good if you purchased something that’s not here in the US that you have a backup plan, just in case. Babesta “holds it til you need it” for free so that new parents can purchase early so to know that their chosen goods are here and waiting, and they can decide their perfect timing! It can help sidestep the “out of stock” issue that “just in time” deliveries fall prey to. Most cribs these days can be converted to toddler beds when the time comes, by using a (separately purchasable) “toddler conversion kit”. This will turn the crib into a mini-bed with 4 low sides or a day bed. And sometimes, the convertibility goes a step further! Dutailier makes cribs that not only convert to toddler beds but also to twin beds. This is great for families who want to make one choice for the room and be set until college! You guarantee if you purchased the companion dresser, that your set up has staying power, and you never have to worry about matching later on. Many try to decide between a rocker or glider for their nursery, and for each, choices abound. There’s no easy answer, so we suggest that you sit in each type and make sure you’re comfortable. You’ll be using this chair more than you think so it needs to be a good feel. Gliders come in many styles, some with high firm backs, others with cushy pillows, and yet others with a reclining function (some with a motorized option which is great if you had a C-section). Many of these chairs are custom, so give yourself ample time to make a decision you will love! When buying your nursery furniture, it’s nice to know you have a service that can put it together, take away the garbage and inspect. Babesta’s white glove service does just that. Even if you’re handy, it’s great to have peace of mind that a professional installed the nursery. This, alongside of our “hold it til you need it” service, is our way of making sure the nursery journey is a snap. Convertibility & Next Steps! To rock or to glide? White Glove Services (and more!)

SUPERIOR INTERIORS

Perch toddler bed ,18000, $400.

Toddler time means a whole new look: something fun, playful but more grown up than the nursery. Artful or rockstar, and everything in between, it’s time to show off that personality!

B ack to school means back to the city, and back to the apartment living that we New Yorkers love. You remember choosing all of the nursery goodies when you were pregnant, but now baby’s a tot, and ready for their toddler conversion kit (don’t wait too long!), or, if you have the space, a big boy/girl bed. It’s an exciting time, as the room can take on more of your tot’s preferences. You know by now if you’re in girly girl territory or if you’ve got an indie rocker on your hands. As you amass the special items to give the room pizazz, think ahead about the basics, that you’ll need as they grow. From toddler bed to bed, to storage, a desk, and maybe a play table, there’s furniture that will help your child maximize their use of the bedroom, now that they’re not sleeping all day! With those items chosen, it’s time to add the personality, in the form of art, wallpaper, lighting and other decorative objects. Have fun!

DESK THE HALLS It’s good to start them early, establishing a place for them to do their homework, even if said homework is “light” at the beginning (that changes quickly enough)! A predictable homework spot will help with focus and self-discipline.

TABLE TIME Playdates are even more fun if there’s a playtable set up for all of the afternoon’s activities. Your dining table will thank you for it!

ART FROM THE START Having some fun art in the room really gives the space some flair. Whether it’s playful or geometric, bold type or an original from a local artist, let it extend your color scheme and add some flavor! And remember, a good frame goes a long way!
