On behalf of the Department of Medical Education, our 120 clinical academic faculty, the 115 residents and fellows, and hundreds of alumni who have trained at our campus over the last 65 years, I welcome you to Kern Medical. We are the premiere academic institution and tertiary referral center serving the Southern San Joaquin Valley of Central California. More importantly, we are the public safety net hospital that provides medical care to the most vulnerable patient population in Bakersfield and our surrounding areas. We currently sponsor four fully ACGME-accredited residency programs in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Psychiatry with plans for further expansion in the near future. In addition, we support accredited fellowships in Infectious Disease, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry. Our residency and fellowship programs are associated with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, with the majority of our faculty holding academic positions at UCLA as well. In conjunction with our sponsored programs, we provide high acuity pediatric care both in the

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the Undergraduate Medical Education program at Kern Medical. For more than 65 years, Kern Medical has been training and preparing medical students, residents, and fellows for careers in medicine, which has laid the foundation for the health and wellness of the Kern County community. Our program is one of a kind; we care for a unique patient population, with cases and pathology not seen in most places. Kern Medical is located in the Southern San Joaquin Valley and serves as the designated safety net hospital for Kern County. We have the privilege of caring for the most vulnerable and underserved in our community and we are grateful to fulfill that role, ensuring everyone receives thehighest level of carepossible. As the tertiary referral center and academic teaching institution, we strive to improve patient health by delivering high- quality, safe, equitable, and compassionate care. The future for Kern Medical is bright; we continue to expand our educational offerings by increasing learning opportunities, advancing technology in our programs, and recruiting the best physician educators and some of the nation’s most promising students.

Our graduates have published numerous peer-reviewed research papers, book chapters and presented at national and international meetings. Our new simulation center is dedicated to providing high-fidelity simulation with standardized patients and is an integral component of our medical training. We are creating a new robust undergraduate medical curriculum that incorporates faculty coaching, innovative electives and integrated simulation as we strive to educate and prepare the next generation of physicians. WHAT SETS KERN MEDICAL APART? Kern Medical is committed to improving the medical student experience by augmenting the curriculumwith a robust simulation program. STUDENT UNION The Student Union provides essential space dedicated to meet the needs of our medical students. Available 24/7, it’s a place to study, relax and connect with peers. This space provides students individual computer work stations, a large meeting room, a comfortable lounge with a kitchenette and dining area. The Student Union building also houses Kern Medical’s Department of Medical Education, which supports Kern Medical’s Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education residency and fellowship programs. The Student Union was funded by a donation from Ross University School of Medicine.

Core Clerkships

This core rotation, comprised of both ambulatory and inpatient settings, introduces students to the various topics of general internal medicine. Serving a social-economic and ethnically diverse population, students are immersed into primary, tertiary and specialty care. By the end of their clerkship, students are well on the way to developing a rational, evidence-based approach to the evaluation and care of hospitalized adult medical patients at Kern Medical and Adventist Health Bakersfield, and patients encountered in ambulatory settings.

Overview The faculty, fellows and resident physicians of Kern Medical are dedicated, enthusiastic and committed to the education of our medical students. Our faculty consider the time and experience on our clerkships very valuable, and strive to enhance the learning environment for all. Students participate in educational programs that meet accreditation standards set for their respective medical schools. Currently, Kern Medical offers the following core clerkships:

INAUGURAL FELLOW Kern Medical has added an Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program, starting the 2021-2022 academic year. Carlos D’Assumpcao, MD, is the inaugural fellow for this program. Carlos is a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine and a recent graduate of Kern Medical’s Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Obstetrics & Gynecology

Surgery

The Surgery Clerkship rotation is designed to maximize time and exposure in both General and Subsurgical specialties. There are two General Surgery rotations, comprising a total of six weeks of General Surgery. Students are exposed to a vast array of pathology that constitutes a general surgery practice and participate in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient care. Students are encouraged to review the patients’ complaints and symptoms, their pertinent past medical history andphysical exam, laboratory and diagnostic exams (including radiographic films), and make recommendations for treatment. Should surgery be offered, students are prepared to assist, and know the basic principles of Pre-Operative and Post-Operative care. Students in the ambulatory setting will learn to develop a care plan for the appropriate operation to be performed and demonstrate their ability to formulate a pre-operative/ post-operative assessment and plan. Fourth year medical students rotating through Surgery are divided into multiple two-week and three-week rotations, allowing each medical student to maximize their time and exposure in both General Surgery and in the Surgery Sub-Specialties. Rotations available to these students include: • General Surgery • Colon and Rectal Surgery • Orthopedic Surgery • Head and Neck Surgery

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Clerkship rotation exposes students to women’s health, both in the ambulatory and inpatient setting. This clerkship offers students hands-on experience in both labor and delivery and gynecological care. Students will care for a spectrum of the most common diseases and health conditions, and an equally complex diversity of healthcare needs and clinical situations. They will be exposed to care for a variety of medical treatments and surgical procedures mastered by the general gynecologist and obstetrician to treat four deeply complex sub-specialties: • High-risk obstetrics (perinatology/maternal fetal medicine) • Gynecologic oncology • Reproductive endocrinology and infertility • Urogynecology

AMBER JONES, DO, MPH, FACS Dr. Jones serves as the 4th Year Clerkship Director in Surgery. She is a graduate of Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine, having completed her clinical rotations and residency at Kern Medical. Dr. Jones is currently the Surgical ICU Director, Surgical Critical Care Intensivist, and is a Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon.

JUAN LOPEZ, MD, FACOG Dr. Lopez is a graduate of Ross University School of Medicine. He completed his medical student rotations and residency at Kern Medical. He now serves as Chair of the department and Director of the Residency Program.

Psychiatry

The Psychiatry Clerkship introduces students to the care of inpatient and ambulatory psychiatric patients. Students gain competency in the basic assessment and management of the psychiatric patient through the ability to understand and treat psychopathology, learn interview techniques, understand diagnostic criteria used to diagnose psychiatric disorders, and to develop an understanding of the psychopharmacology involved. Rotations in this core clerkship are designed to allow adequate exposure to psychiatry patients of all ages including child/adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

This rotation was great because it truly prepared students for their SHELF and Step 2 CK Exams. From the willingness of the physicians to teach to the schedule of didactics, I feel that it set students up for success. – Christian S., Medical Student I was able to see a variety of patients with many psychiatric conditions. The Pediatrics Clerkship rotation offers both ambulatory and inpatient experiences. Students benefit from treating a variety of pediatric pathology. They also have opportunities to explore aspects of preventative medicine and psycho-social-environmental factors that relate directly to the care of infants, children, adolescents, and their families.

Minal Bhatia, MD and Angad Kahlon, MD met as medical students, returned to Kern Medical for their residency and have started their family in the Central Valley. Dr. Kahlon recently joined Kern Medical as faculty, while Dr. Bhatia recently completed her Fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.

SARA ABDIJADID, DO, MS Dr. Abdijadid serves as Director of the Psychiatry Residency Program. She is a graduate of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, and completed her clinical rotations and residency at Kern Medical.

The Family Medicine rotation offers valuable experience in both the ambulatory and inpatient settings, and is administered at two clinical sites. East Niles Community Health Center, where the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program is located, is the main clinic where students participate in providing comprehensive outpatient care. When patients require hospitalization, they are admitted to Kern Medical so we can provide the best continuity of care. These clinical sites provide ample opportunity for students to acquire an understanding of the unique role of Family Medicine and its importance in the context of the community’s overall health and well-being. Students learn through direct clinical experience, combined with dedicated didactic time and structured learning activities, working alongside residents and their preceptors. Simulation Center

Each of the center’s 11 training areas are designed to reflect the realities encountered in actual care settings, and is fully functional. The center is a contiguous system designed to simulate the patient flow process with a pre-hospital room, emergency room, operating room, intensive care unit, obstetric operation room, neonatal intensive care room, hospital room, training room and pharmacy. Two of the simulation rooms are connected to the command center separated by a one-way mirror with large televisions to provide the live-stream observer participants with additional angles. Simulation sessions can be recorded and are immediately available for playback in the simulation center's multimedia conference room.

Kern Medical houses a state-of-the-art Simulation Center, designed for learners to practice and further enhance their knowledge, skills and experience through replication of a variety of scenarios in the healthcare environment. Learners are able to develop clinical competence, practice skills, and develop confidence to transform and improve patient outcomes in a safe learning space.

We train a wide array of professionals throughout the healthcare continuum, including medical students, residents and fellows, staff throughout all clinical areas, as well as our surrounding community. Clinicians and educators partner to create innovative learning experiences and evaluations. Utilizing the web-based recording system, students can review videos, perform peer and self-assessments, set learning goals and receive feedback from faculty. Providing learners with realistic patient scenarios and clinical problem-solving challenges assures appropriate development of clinical skills, and ultimately improves whole patient care.

At the Simulation Center, each simulation includes a group pre- brief and debrief with an emphasis on promoting a culture of safety and a focus on: • Quality of care

VALLEY FEVER INSTITUTE Kern Medical established the Valley Fever Institute, a place where our internationally recognized infectious disease experts provide training on how to diagnose and treat Coccidioidmycosis, also known as Valley Fever, to primary care physicians, specialists, and other healthcare providers throughout the state, with the goal of reducing the prevalence of misdiagnosis and delayed care.

The Kern Medical Foundation is committed to supporting an environment of academic excellence. Our efforts focus on securing funds that provide support to medical students, residents, fellows and faculty. These funds enhance medical education, improve skill development, and cultivate a culture that promotes well-being and learning. Alongside Kern Medical, we strive to be a leader in improving the health and wellness of the Southern San Joaquin Valley. We have developed the Kern Medical Academy, which is a health career pipeline that begins with high school students and provides them with opportunities to interact with medical students and residents, as well as experience a variety of hands on learning opportunities within the walls of Kern Medical. Over the last few years, the Foundation has raised more than $5.1M to support medical education. Kern Medical’s long history of caring for those suffering from Valley Fever began with Dr. Hans E. Einstein, the foremost authority on the disease who led our treatment for decades. The Institute is home to the region’s renowned researcher and clinician Dr. Royce H. Johnson. Along with Dr. Johnson, our Associate Medical Directors include infectious disease specialists Dr. Arash Heidari, and Dr. Rasha Kuran. Designed as a patient-centered specialty care clinic, the Institute incorporates patient care, treatment, support services, education, and research at a single location. Many of the treatments offered at the Valley Fever Clinic are not readily available in most parts of the country; patients are referred to us locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally for specialized care. SOUTHERN SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY RESEARCH FORUM Kern Medical is committed to the rigors of academics and research. This annual event is designed to foster in-depth comprehension of research, and the promotion of scholarly pursuits among residents, faculty, physicians, medical students, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, and mental health clinicians for the advancement of medical science. The Forum serves to highlight research activities and to recognize special contributions and innovations to healthcare and medical education. Research and scholarly activity are inclusive requirements of all approved residency-training specialty programs at Kern Medical. Participation in medical and scientific research contributes to the advancement of high-quality patient care and serves to recognize Kern Medical as a best practice, science-based, tertiary referral center.

EVERY KID PEDIATRICS PROJECT Kern Medical Foundation has secured more than $9 million in grant funding for our Every Kid Pediatrics project. Funding will be used to secure new state-of-the-art pediatric equipment and renovate spaces for both inpatient and ambulatory pediatric clinics. Construction began August 2021.

After 19 years, the Kern Medical Research Forum grew to become the Southern San Joaquin Valley Research Forum to expand and better reflect the valuable medical research taking place not just at Kern Medical, but California State University, Bakersfield, the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program, and other area medical training programs. The Forum is funded by the Kern Medical Alumni Society.

The Kern Medical Alumni Society was established to help build a network for Residency Program graduates with one goal – to foster relationships and build connections among members & community partners to help advance patient care and education.
