Halloween Party Disco Fever 2017

Seventy members had a real “trick or treat party” on October 28, eating, drinking, and dancing the night away. Many thanks to Judy Konigsberg, Ethel Schultz and their committee, Martina, Ashish and all the staff at Food and Beverage for planning and decorating this wonderful event. Once again, Bernd our chef, was very creative with his culinary skills. Some delicious dishes included were “Frankenstein Caesar Salad”, “eyeball caprese salad”, “spooky kale salad”, “road kill olive chicken”, “headless shrimp cantonese” “death by chocolate cake”, “scary cookies” to name just a few. The theme was “Disco Fever”. “Mickey D”, Bill Coleman, and Keith Lang, the DJ’s that night, played all of our favorite music from the 70’s. They never took a break, and members never took a break off the dance floor. Everyone had fun dancing and singing and reminiscing. Many members wore all white or orange and black that night, but some took that extra step. Congratulations to Georgianna Cotton who came in third place, Ellen Buscemi for second place, and Marleen Hacker and Allan

Eisinger who came in first. All dressed in very imaginative “graveyard attire” with a great make-up job.

What a team!! Thanks to everyone and Marie' Kravecas’ confidence that "yes" we could do a 3rd year of the Showcase and her idea to have the Dress for Success accessories brought to the Showcase. I'm adding a thank you to Dottie Kovel and Ellen Buscemi who began collecting Accessories in the women's locker room and managed the collection so well at the Showcase -- Dottie, your signs were terrific!

Interesting to me was that many members came with knowledge of what the VMP Showcase was -- they had a purpose; they asked for specific opportunities. AND, we had several new members come!! We can never track the individual connections that members make with agencies, but my sense is that we had many more this year than in the past.

IT’S NOT YOUR MAMA’S EXERCISE ROUTINE!

A GREAT WAY TO TONE UP AND SLIM DOWN TO YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC!

Is Disco Music your thing; or are you a little bit country or a little bit rock and roll?

Do you groove to the 90’s beat; or do you swing to today’s hits? Do you long to hear the songs of the 50s and 60s? No matter your taste in music, the water is the place to be. You burn tons of calories while you splash around in the water and listen to the beat of your favorite tunes; pretty much all without breaking a sweat! Yes, you read correctly—all with barely breaking a sweat. That’s a great exercise. For an hour on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, Chris Dimond, instructor (who gives a bit of life in- spiration at the end of her classes), turns the Frenchman’s Creek main pool into a fun zone for guys and gals of all exercise levels. On Tuesday and Thursday, Matt Claudel brings his taste in tunes and personal style to instruct just the guys (during Season); and, the Sunday class is open to everyone. The instructors use the force of water resistance to work those muscles and gain a larger range of motion. To aid in building muscle and burning calories, they also use pool toys such as gloves, weights, and/or pool noodles in their programs. Similar to land aerobics, water aerobics works on cardio training, strength training, and balancing control focusing on aerobic endurance and resistance training. How- ever, unlike land aerobics, water aerobics is a very low impact exercise; thus very safe for people who are prone to arthritis, osteoporosis, or weak joints. The push and pull of the water allows for in- creased muscle training along with a built-in safety barrier for those aching joints and muscles. And more blood gets pumped to the heart—the most important muscle in your body. Another added ben- efit of the water is its cooling effect on the body. You will burn those calories all the while staying cool with less noticeable sweat. Water aerobics is beneficial to a multitude of people because the density of the water allows for easy mobility. Plus you don’t have to worry about falling and injuring yourself like you do on land. You just land into the water—it protects you. .

AQUA FUSION and AQUA SPINNING , continued And for those of you into cycling, why not try Aqua Spinning. This exercise combines a stationary water bike

submerged under the water for a total upper and lower body workout. Using the water’s resistance you get a complete cardio and strength training routine with very little impact on the joints all the while staying cool— something you don’t get in land spinning!

So the next time you get frustrated with your workout; and, you’re hot and sweaty; and, you want to give up, try the water. Splashing around in a pool is always great fun; and, water aerobics is great social enjoy- ment too. People are friendly and its cool in the water. Where else can you hear your favorite songs; get wet playing in the water while toning and burning calories; and get a bit of inspiration to start your day.

LADIES PALM BEACH PAR 3 GOLF DAY

After the Ladies First Annual Palm Beach Par 3 event, the compliments just kept pouring in: “wonderful day, a lot of fun, kudos to the staff, definitely a great success, all perfect,” etc. ,etc. ,etc. This special outing, on October 20, 2017, was very well planned, thanks to JR and Rich and our great golf staff. The ladies were transported to the course by Frenchman’s Creek Shuttle bus. They played a shamble format in groups of four, each with a member of the professional staff as a fifth. Those professionals who took part were JR, Rich, Rocco, Chris and golf merchandising manager, Stacey (who could so very easily be one of the golf pros.) Despite the negative forecast, the day went beautifully and the rain waited until everyone had finished golf and was enjoying a lovely lunch in the clubhouse. After lunch, everyone was shuttled back to Frenchman’s, where further enjoyment awaited– cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres in the sports bar. To conclude with more complimentary quotes, “it was a great day from start to finish and we look forward to the next one. Frenchman's Creek Ladies Golf Association Opening Day, on November 7, 2017, was played in beautiful weather. More than 150 women signed up for the ABCD 9-hole step aside scramble format which more than covered the two courses. After golf, the ladies enjoyed a lovely luncheon. For the main course, each table was like an individual buffet, with platters of seven additions, such as lobster salad, grilled chicken breasts, brussel sprouts, tuna and chicken salad plus other items to add to a lovely plated garden salad that was served to each individual. A delicious dessert of a truffle tart and most everyone’s favorite ice cream, Graeters Black Raspberry chocolate chip, topped off a very tasty meal. Everyone received a golf glove as a favor. During the luncheon, Association Chair, Wendi Adler, welcomed everyone and introduced new- members and this year’s FCLGA board members. JR Congdon, our Director of Golf introduced our new golf pro, Kim Augusta, who received a warm welcome. Sharon Rochlin, Tournament Chair, spoke about some highlights of this coming season-to which all the ladies look forward.

Please stop in the Golf Pro Shop and meet our new golf professional KIM AUGUSTA , who joined our staff on November 15th. She was brought up in Rumford, Rhode Island and started to play golf at the age of 4. She was taught by her Dad, and what a fine job he did. Kim attended the University of Miami on a golf scholarship. After graduating, she stayed in Florida and received her LPGA status 1999-2004. During this time, she played in “Future Tours,” which are mini tours, travelling constantly to many destinations. Needless to say, this was some- what tiring and she then went to Boca West, was Assistant Pro at Boca Grove and for the past 13 years was Assistant Pro at Bocaire Country Club. Kim is excited to be here and JR and the entire golf staff are happy to welcome her, but no more than all the women golfers !

They played in the Pro Lady Tournament held at PGA National on October 11, 2017. It was played on the Championship Course and of course , they are pictured on hole #15– that everyone knows is “The Bear Trap” where they had 1 birdie and 3 pars!!!! 100 players participated in a best ball of foursome format. Ten different clubs in the area were represented. To quote Rich, “it was great fun for all.”

HELEN and STEPHEN COLMAN are very proud of their granddaughter, Abigail Harrison , who is 11 years old and will be on the Live Fox Musical Special, December 17th at 7 p.m. entitled, “A Christmas Story.” Abigail dances, sings and acts and is quoted to be a “natural.” She also will be returning to Season 4 of “The Affair” on Showtime.

JOYCE and MEL PARADISE have ten granddaughters of whom they are very proud. Granddaughter, Lindsey, daughter of Susan and Marshall Goodman, was married in August 2016 to Andrew Warman. Granddaughter, Jackie Goodman, is presently a practicing attorney; Granddaughter, Cori Goodman graduated from the University of Buffalo; Granddaughter, Ava Paradise, daughter of Michael, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Wisconsin. Granddaughters, Samantha and Eliza, twin daughters of Steven, graduated High School with honors in June and are now attending the University of Michigan and Duke University respectively. Granddaughter, Marielle Paradise, daughter of Joslin and Steven, is in her 5th year at the School of American Ballet and will make her 3rd appearance at Lincoln Center in the New York City Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” in December. She also appeared in “A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream in April. We are looking forward to many more happy occasions with all of them. From the oldest to the TO OUR NEW MEMBERS AND THOSE WITH NEW DOGS Lois Stern wants to remind everyone of the Bofus Toads found everywhere there is water. They are very dangerous to your pets. The bufo toad ( Bufo marinus ) (also known as marine toad, giant toad, cane toad) is a huge brown to grayish-brown toad with a creamy yellow belly and deeply-pitted parotoid glands extending down the back. Adult giant toads generally range in size from 6 to 9in (15 to 23cm), but may get larger. When confronted by a predator, it is able to "shoot" bufo toxin from the parotoid and other glands on the back in the form of white viscous venom. The secretions are highly toxic to dogs, cats, and other animals, and can cause skin irritation in humans. To avoid attracting toads to areas where pets are, do not leave pet food in open dishes in the yard. Bufo's are attracted to dogs watering dishes, and may sit in the rim long enough to leave enough toxin to make a dog ill. Dogs may mouth bufo toads, thus getting a large dose of the bufo's toxins, secreted from the skin and parotoid glands. Symptoms enerally include profuse foamy salivation that looks like shaving cream. I mmediately rinse out the pet’s mouth with a drippy wet wash cloth several times to remove any toxin from the mouth. Do not use a hose to rinse the mouth as water can easily be forced into the lungs causing more problems. Proceed to the nearest veterinary clinic or emergency clinic as time is of the essence. The smaller the pet or the larger the toad, the greater there is a risk of toxicity.

“Ladies Day Out,” on November 8th was a delightful excursion to the Gardens Mall. Following a champagne sendoff in the nineteenth hole, Adele McDougall, of the Marketing Department, which planned and arranged everything for the day, accompanied most of the women to the mall on the French- man’s Shuttle, which left at 9:45 a.m. At the mall, they met up with those women who drove, and with a guest services representative from the mall staff. She presented everyone with a gift bag containing information and favors (bags are featured below.) The mall representative and Adele accompanied the group throughout the day. The itinerary included eight retail shops where there were various cosmetic demonstrations and opportunities to shop, with refreshments and drinks, as well as gifts, at each one. There was also a drawing for a prize at each location. After the shops, there was a wonderful wine tasting at Cooper’s Hawk. Everyone had a choice from three separate tastings menus, with eight wines in each. At the end, each “taster” chose the wine she liked best and received a gift bottle of that wine. The day concluded with a lunch at Brio with more drawings for gift certificates to the mall. All in all, it was a wonderful day. Thank you to Adele and the marketing department for a super job. All look forward to the next one on December 13th.

Dogs have been guarding us, working with us, and snuggling with us for thousands of years and Rosebud is no exception. Rosebud is an eleven-and-a-half-year-old Labrador service dog. She can be spotted wearing her service vest while proudly wearing her corsage, a badge of excellence. She has visited hospitals and rehab centers with Ann & Don on many occasions. When a child is upset, Rosebud brings cheer. She is also comforting to the older, sick adults. Rosebud likes other dogs, but her true love is Thorman Halpert. She loves all children, especially Harriet Gross’ great-granddaughter. Rosebud collects the newspapers every morning and for that she gets her breakfast. Food is obviously a big motivator for her. One morning Rosebud could not wait for the newspaper to arrive. In hopes of getting an early breakfast, Rosebud escaped to the Pulver’s house (neighbors) and stole their newspapers. Rosebud especially loves the NY Times, but she hasn’t tried the Wall Street Journal. Is Rosebud trying to tell us something? Rosebud sleeps vertically between Ann & Don. If they get a divorce, (unlikely after almost 60 years) Rosebud will be the correspondent. Rosebud is turning a little gray on her muzzle. Ann has decided that the next time she gets hair color, she will take Rosebud to the salon. Perhaps Rose will have a long wait, but as long as there are snacks and Ann at her side, she will be content.

ALAN and SUSAN LUDWIG are pictured with their new German Shepherd, Julie. She is 4 1/2 months old. She is so sweet, cute, and very energetic. And sharp puppy teeth! She is currently attending puppy class and hopefully will graduate with honors. This is our 4th German Shepherd.

My name is MONA ABRAMS and I have been here 30 years and Dorie has been with me 13 1/2 years. We have grown older and happy together every year except Dorie has grown smarter every day. We have gotten older and arthritic but we are still very happy and we love Frenchman’s Creek.

CHARLES “CHUCK” GANS became a resident last month and lives on Provence Drive . Growing up in Miami Beach, he has returned to Florida via Asheboro, North Carolina where he still has a residence. Charles is so delighted to be at Frenchman’s Creek that his enthusiasm rubs off on you immediately and makes you reappreciate what Frenchman’s is all about. He was most impressed with his new member orientation, thinking that there would be many new residents There and not just he. Thirty-Five Frenchman’s

Staffers in all, welcomed him from Mr. Goswami, Mr. Polselli, all Frenchman’s Directors and Managers to the Chef, down to housekeeping and valet services et all. And all explained their role at Frenchman’s and asked what they could do for him. He is very imbued with the friendliness of our members and thrilled with all of Frenchman’s amenities as he chose our community over all the sur- rounding ones! He also was amazed that three days after he lmoved here all the staff knew his name. (That is a trait, Mr. Goswami is adamant about.) Chuck has 4 children and 5 grandchildren living in many parts of the country. By the way his golf handicap is 5! So please add your welcome to Chuck when you see him.

ELIZABETH and LEE STORCH purchased Carol and Walter Leib’s home on Degas Drive West. They are going to be full time residents. They grew up in Long Island, New York, but raised their children in new Hampshire. They have a son and a daughter and two grandchildren. Lee is a tennis player and being at Admiral’s Cove, was asked to play tennis here. He greatly enjoyed the men he played with and their friendliness. They chose Frenchman’s Creek as the facilities meet their needs. Lee is an avid lap swimmer and to have a separate lap pool is not

available at most if any clubs surrounding us. Of course, the Beach Club is a definite draw. Lee finds the golf course peaceful. They both play golf. Elizabeth is a Canasta and Mah Jong player and also a tennis player. They love what Frenchman’s has to offer and the residents who make it so great. So please also welcome them when you see them.
