WELCOME When I first arrived in Melbourne, I temporarily bunked out east while I found my bearings (and a job). Eager to connect with new music, I discovered a small, yellow-painted shop called JB Hi-Fi on Whitehorse Road, Nunawading (this particular store has since been replaced with an upgraded model). I made a beeline for the door after spotting a sign that read ‘CDs’ and entered what turned out to be an Aladdin’s Cave, where I picked up rare a Spacemen 3 release and an Unkle Japanese import. Impressed, I became a regular there. One of the staff members told me the manager would occasionally throw in a discounted copy of an album amongst the full priced versions, encouraging the ‘hunt’. The breadth of range synonymous with JB Hi-Fi stores meant hunting season was all year round, and whether I was searching for music, games or movies, the possibility of uncovering an undiscovered gem was part of the allure of shopping at JB. JB Hi-Fi chief executive Richard Murray recently confirmed the company’s ongoing support for physical media, and it’s hard to imagine a JB store without it. It’s entrenched in JB Hi-Fi’s heritage, an integral part of the retail experience, and continues to drive this particular ‘hunter’ in-store, week-in-week-out. You just never know what you might unearth. Paul Jones, Editor-in-Chief

After tackling fearsome dinosaurs in last year’s Jurassic World , taking on a fluffy dragon named Elliot in Disney’s Pete’s Dragon was a walk in the park for Bryce Dallas Howard. Words: Gill Pringle "M y sister and I grew up on the original snowdrift,” she says. When Lowery outlined his new take

on Pete’s Dragon , a film that talks about loneliness, friendship and the meaning of family, he had Howard at Elliot’s first fiery breath. "Family means everything to me. I am fiercely protective of my own children," says the actress, who has two kids with actor husband Seth Gabel. Filming Pete’s Dragon in New Zealand for six months, she recalls, "I realised this would be a wonderful experience to share with my family, and they went to school in New Zealand and we lived in a tiny house, all of us on top of each other." Of co-starring with Kiwi national treasure Karl Urban, who plays the villain of the piece, she says, "We all fell in love with New Zealand and were like, ‘We want to move here!’ And Karl was a great example of how to live in a place that is, on the map, so isolated, and yet he’s still able to function in this industry and have a family and all that. For all of us, it was always twenty questions for Karl, like ‘Soooo…Where do you live here? How do you do it?’" Although Howard, 35, grew up around Hollywood royalty, she admits to being nervous about meeting Robert Redford, who plays her father in the film. "The first time we met was while we

A throwback family film set in a world uncluttered by internet and cell phones, David Lowery’s Pete’s Dragon is unapologetically sweet but never sappy. If Disney had wanted sappy, then Lowery – best known for his 2013 R-rated crime drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints – would doubtless be at the bottom of the studio's wish-list. "Regardless of the type of movie I am making, my endeavour is always to make things that matter, that have an effect and will last," Lowery tells STACK . "There’s an integrity that I strive for so, in my pitch for Pete’s Dragon , [Disney] recognised my attempt to make a solid movie that had classic, old- fashioned storytelling and, at the same time, a very distinct point of view. “From the first moment I met with them, I think they realised this isn’t someone who’s going to try to reinvent the wheel. I wanted to do a classic story of a boy and a dragon. I wasn’t about making a weird, artsy Disney movie," he adds, citing Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book as inspiration, along with Bill Condon‘s upcoming Beauty and the Beast and what Alex Ross Perry might potentially do with Winnie the Pooh . “These are filmmakers who have made films in the past that you may say are subversive, but they all have integrity to them, and they bring that integrity and point of view to these classic Disney tales. Disney are making great movies right now. And redefining what a Walt Disney picture is in a very definite way, and that is to tell old stories in a new way. It’s a smart thing to do, and I think they responded to my take on this." Lowery then unabashedly admits to basing his unusually furry dragon on his own cats, whipping out his phone to eagerly show STACK snaps of his own regal felines, Biggie and Tupac.

set. However, no meeting with the actress would be complete with asking her about Jurassic World 2 , set to begin shooting next year. "I think the safest, most professional thing to do is to not say anything unless it is said before I say it," she laughs, only revealing that she will abandon her high heels in the sequel, and zipping her lips when quizzed about the rumours of "pet" dinosaurs.

knew he was at the other end, and I was very far away from set. And when David yelled 'action', and we were running towards each other, I picked up speed because I was really excited, and I totally barreled into him! And he’s a really sturdy, strong guy, so he took the hit, like the man he is, and then David yelled 'cut 'and Robert says to me, ‘You came at me like a cannonball!’ And I was like, ‘Sorry! Nice to meet you!’"

"We probably shouldn’t go further than this! Because you’re leaning up against some things that I’m like, ‘aaahhh don’t make an expression!’"

NO STRINGS ATTACHED From Laika, the acclaimed stop-motion creators of Coraline and Boxtrolls, comes Kubo and theTwo Strings , the studio's most ambitious project yet. Words: Gill Pringle

T he son of Nike scion Phil Knight, Travis Knight grew up playing with dolls, creating lands of make believe filled with miniature figures in his bedroom. Shunning his father’s big-bucks sexy world of sports, Travis instead attended Portland State University, interning at Will Vinton studios, a local stop-motion studio which coined the term “claymation”, specialising in commercials. But when recession threatened to close the studio, Phil and Travis Knight stepped in and relaunched it as Laika in 2005, re-imagining it as a film studio. Making its dazzling 2009 film debut with Henry Selick’s Coraline , the film went on to gross US$125 million,

directorial debut. Based on an original story by Marc Haimes, Kubo is a young boy who must find a magical suit of armour worn by his late father in order to defeat vengeful family spirits from the past. “At the core of our mission we always strive to tell new and original stories, things that are thematically rich, emotionally resonant, are challenging in some way and tell beautiful stories. Every single time out we try to do something new. We don’t want to keep repeating ourselves,” says Knight, 43, who put in long 15-hour days working side by side with his colleagues to realise his latest dream.

Enlisting Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Rooney Mara and Ralph Fiennes to voice Kubo ’s main players, he says, “I think we have been blessed by the calibre of talent that have been drawn to this film. We have five Oscar-nominated, if not Oscar-winning, actors in a film. That’s astounding, that’s staggering, particularly for a little ramshackle outfit in the pacific northwest, that we were able to attach that level of

The antithesis of Disney

animated movies, Laika has never shied away from presenting very adult and scary themes, wrapped up in the guise of a children’s movie. When STACK meets with Knight, he’s bent over a miniature graveyard, adjusting the lens on a mounted camera to get just the right angle. His stage is one of 25 similar stages – populated by skeletons, villages and glittering oceans created from cellophane and coloured lights – scattered about the aircraft hangar-sized studio. When Laika celebrated its tenth anniversary last year, Knight might have been expected to put on a suit and sit in an office pouring over financial spreadsheets. “But what would be the fun in that?" asks the President/CEO in his customary t-shirt and jeans, sporting a buzz-cut. Instead, he stepped up his game, with Kubo and the Two Strings actually serving as his

talent to our movie. “These actors could be in anything, they could have their choice of any script, but the fact that they gravitated to our story just speaks to the quality of the movie, which I’m incredibly proud of, and they give beautiful performances within the film. “As an artist you make things you want your children to appreciate as well," says Knight, who is married with three kids. "We don’t always do things specifically for our kids, but I can imagine that Charlize and Matthew would like to do work that their children can see, experience and enjoy as well.”

CINEMA INTERVIEW

Assembling

In 1960, director John Sturges gathered the leading men of the day for the classic western The Magnificent Seven . Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Yul Brynner, Robert Vaughn and James Coburn delighted audiences as a group of gunslingers hired to defend an oppressed Mexican peasant village. Now Antoine Fuqua has assembled a star- powered septet to retell the same story, recruiting the likes of Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke to deal with the outlaws who have brought a sleepy western town to its knees.

some people will think that's because it’s a black man walking into a bar. But my thought was that they look at all the Seven like that because they’re all mean, tough men. And when those guys walk in a room it's not about race, it's that they’re afraid of these type of men, whether its a Native American walking in or Denzel walking in, or Chris Pratt walking in. They get the same reaction. From everybody.” Shot in Louisiana and New Mexico, The Magnificent Seven was fraught with such difficulties that Fuqua doubts he would make another Western, having thoroughly got it out of his system now. “That old saying, ‘Be careful what you wish for,’ comes to mind,” he smiles. “As a kid you’re like, ‘I want to make a Western,’ and you’ve got the guns and you’re playing and it’s fun and you can go home and eat and mom is there and your friends. You can quit whenever you want and get mad at your friend and walk away because you wanted to be the indian today. “But the reality of filming is that horses do what they want. I’ve had that experience before, but this was a reminder. Having a big cast of actors is challenging, every day. Filming it in a place where it rains constantly, where your set washes away, is challenging. Most of the time it was over 110 degrees.”  And his worst nightmare? “That’s got to be a scene where we had hundreds of horses

Words: Gill Pringle

I n keeping with Hollywood’s mandate to bring more diversity to the screen, Antoine Fuqua’s motley crew features actors of all colour, including Denzel Washington, Byung-hun Lee and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. If it smacks of a self-conscious colour-by-numbers approach, then the director begs to differ. “I thought about it and I didn’t think about it,” he says when STACK meets with him at an editing suite in Los Angeles. “When we were discussing who the lead would be, we had a list of the usual guys and I was in a room with MGM and I said, ‘You know who would be amazing as a lead like Yul Brynner? Denzel Washington.’ And the room went quiet and then everybody says, ‘You think he would do it because he hasn’t done a Western before?’” recalls the director, who got on the next flight to New York to talk with his Training Day and Equalizer leading man.

The race card will play out regardless, although Fuqua insists his own Magnificent Seven are such mean killing machines, it will render audiences colour blind. “You’ll see a scene where we first meet them in the bar – when Denzel goes into the bar and the whole room goes quiet – and naturally

Now that was daunting.”  While Fuqua and Washington are old friends, the director was thrilled to introduce Pratt to audiences in a different way to how we’ve seen him before. “I love Chris. Chris is charming, he’s funny, but he has an interesting depth in him that’s yet to be discovered and I wanted to put him with Vincent D’Onofrio and Ethan Hawke. I wanted to see the young star with all these guys and play with that soup.”

“Denzel knows I love Westerns and so we had lunch and talked about it. And then from that point it just opened up the floodgates to be more diverse. I didn’t think about it as colour. I just thought I needed a powerful lead and colour was a conversation that came after.   “It’s a different world we live in and, to me, the movie is about terrorism and it’s going to take us all to fight terrorism, so that’s what this is. That group represents the world today.”

INTERVIEW CINEMA

Haley Bennett is the woman in a man’s world in the remake of The Magnificent Seven . And she loved every minute of it, especially breaking the stereotype of female characters in Westerns. Words: Scott Hocking H aley Bennett plays the recently widowed Emma Cullen, who hires bounty hunter Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington) and six Haley get your gun

gunslingers to dispatch the corrupt industrialist (Peter Sarsgaard) who murdered her husband and now intends to plunder her hometown. Emma is a rarity in a Western, a gutsy female character in what is essentially a male-dominated genre – a fact that surprised the 28-year-old actress when she first read the script. “I knew there was a female role, but I didn’t have high hopes that it would be a very deep character,” she recalls, citing the lack of significant female players in the Western genre. “Usually when you see a woman they’re the victim, or they’re in the kitchen, or at home worrying about the men who are out on the adventure. It’s unfortunate. “But there’s a lot for Emma to do; she’s right there with the guys on the front line and in the trenches. I’m really feminine, so it was great to get my hands dirty, strap on my gun holsters and ride a horse – in a dress! I felt pretty cool up there in a dress when they were all in pants. I wanted to tell them, ‘you put on the dress and we’ll see how well you ride’. It’s not easy. “It’s such a male-oriented film, so it was fun to get to do all the stuff that the guys were doing. I really got an insight into a man’s world,” she laughs. When it came to physical preparation, Bennett took up boxing to develop the reflexes and endurance that the role required. “The women of that period were very strong,“ she explains. “They were out in the field and rolling out pies and doing manual labour. I didn’t want to be as willowy as I was at the beginning; I wanted to get some of that

grit that comes with boxing. You have to have a lot of endurance to box, so that was an important aspect in making the film, too. There were going to be long days outside and it was going to be hot, so that helped.” Bennett also spent time at the gun range learning to handle a Navy Colt and a Winchester rifle. “Working with firearms is an adrenaline rush,” she says. “It feels like something you’re not supposed to be doing, so I had to get used to the feel of a gun in my hands. I got really good with the Winchester.” The Magnificent Seven remake isn’t just about gunslingers on horseback out for vengeance. Bennett hopes that the film’s strong themes of unity and diversity will resonate with audiences when they see it. “This film is so multicultural: there’s a black man, and a Mexican, and a Native American ... they’re all outsiders who come together and achieve this great thing together. So I think that’s an important message to take away.”

CINEMA INTERVIEW

It’s been over a decade since we last caught up with bungling boss David Brent, star of mundane mockumentary The Office . He’s had plenty of time, then, to become a tampon rep, form a band with a former member of Razorlight, pen some tunes and take off on tour… BRENT’S BACK

D espite Ricky Gervais’s success across a number of projects in the worlds of television ( Extras, An Idiot Abroad ), cinema ( The Invention of Lying, Cemetery Junction ) and stand up, the 55-year-old Berkshire-born comic will always be best remembered for his cringe-worthy antics as The Office ’s David Brent – the useless middle manager of a suburban paper company with an unquenchable thirst to be liked, and the unfortunate habit of putting his foot firmly in his own mouth. “There’s a lot of me in Brent and vice versa, we’re intertwined in many ways,” explains Gervais. “I was always an idiot who wanted to make people laugh. We both seek approval, we both need validation from our peers, and we both possess egos that make us giant idiots sometimes – but who doesn’t relate to that?” Now, thirteen years after the cameras stopping rolling at Wernham Hogg, Brent is back, and this time he’s traded the small screen for the silver variety. Brent is going out on tour with his fictional band Foregone Conclusion – and apart from swapping the paper trade for the life of a toiletries rep, not much has changed about Gervais’s alter-ego. “He’s still unintentionally offensive, he still wants to be loved,

He’s not equipped for that harsh world of alpha males, the dog-eat-dog,” says Gervais of Brent’s quest for recognition. “He’s a 55-year- old tampon rep who’s cashing in every penny he’s earned to make his dream happen. He’s no longer just pratting around an office – this is next level tragic.” Gervais’s decision to return to Brent after all these years may well come as a surprise given his He’s a 55-year-old tampon rep who’s cashing in every penny he’s earned to make his dream happen

2013 gave Gervais the opportunity to give fans of Brent a glimpse of where their favourite middle-manager is now. “He was managing this young rapper and came out with the unforgettable political reggae anthem, Equality Street,” says Gervais of Brent’s musical return to our screens. “While writing that, I wrote another six or seven songs for him – we had this new life for David Brent, away from The Office .” And Gervais is content with the possibility of disappointed fans in favour of focusing on his favourite character. “They’ll go to this thinking it’s The Office: The Movie and they

CINEMA FEATURE

There’s a scene in Don’t Breathe involving a turkey baster that is so gross and appalling, that the entire audience utters a collective “Eeeww” while squirming in their seats. Words: Gill Pringle BLIND TERROR

T he turkey baster scene also happens to be one of director Fede Alvarez’s most proudest moments. “I have night vision videos of the audience reaction the first time we showed the movie, and their expressions during that scene are so funny. Men and women have totally different reactions. I should run it as a trailer in slow motion!” he says enthusiastically. “The turkey baster is such a powerful weapon. You can show an audience a knife with blood and they don‘t even flinch, they don’t care. But they see the baster and they lose their minds, its explosive!

Taboo goes a long way in movies.” Alvarez, a protégé of legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi, could talk for hours about why this grotesque scene is so chilling, but to repeat them here would be to spoil the plot of what is one of the most unique horror thrillers in years. Don’t Breathe follows a trio of friends who break into the home of a blind recluse, confident of an easy score. What could possibly go wrong? Actress Jane Levy, who made an unforgettable turn as the demonically possessed Mia in Alvarez’s 2013 Evil Dead remake, shares the scares with Dylan

“Fede is a total sick f–k,” laughs Lang, joining STACK as we chat with Alvarez and the cast in Los Angeles. “I prepared for the role by blindfolding myself. I went on an exploration of my apartment to see how well I knew it, and it turned out I didn’t know it nearly as well as I thought I did.” The cast bonded quickly, working in Budapest where this particular house of horrors was erected on a film set. “We needed to drink a lot of wine every evening to let off steam, and Dylan would play music for us,” says Levy, referring to her co-star who fronts indie rock band The Narwhals. She still has nightmares about the dog: “There was actually two dogs. One was much friendlier and we used him a lot but the other was really mean and was trained to attack me. I kept thinking, is it going to eat me right now?”

Minnette and Daniel Zovatto, while veteran actor Stephen Lang and a vicious, snarling Doberman serve as formidable adversaries.

BLOOD FATHER

RELEASED: Sept 1 DIRECTOR: Jean-François Richet CAST: Mel Gibson, Erin Moriarty, Diego Luna RATING: MA15+ Mel Gibson’s role in Blood Father may be the perfect response to the image that the actor cultivated as a result of his very public and personal outbursts in recent years. Jean- François Richet’s film doesn’t disregard Old Man Gibson – it panders to him. Actors may not be the characters they play, but it would be too simple an evaluation to suggest that there isn’t an element of the reverse. Gibson is John Link, a worn out tattoo artist doing his utmost to avoid breaching his sobriety and his parole. To imagine that Link is a warped avenue of penance and rehabilitation for Gibson isn’t much of a stretch. His estranged daughter, Lydia (Erin Moriarty) arrives at his trailer out of the blue. She has accidently shot her drug-kingpin boyfriend, Jonah (Diego Luna), and is on the run from the cops and the cartel. Link and Lydia hit the road in a decaying Chevy Nova that would have done Max Rockatansky proud, and embark on a journey of revenge and redemption. Richet elevates material that might have otherwise smacked too much of post- Taken exploitation. The film is a Western with cars instead of horses, and bikers instead of cowboys. Blood Father is trash, albeit enormously satisfying trash. It’s also a reminder of what a captivating screen presence Gibson can be, personal woes be damned. John Roebuck Sausage Party is an interesting movie, in that it probably shouldn’t exist. So rude, crude, politically incorrect and ridiculously funny (if you’re into that kind of thing), the film is the perfect Seth Rogen project; a wretched, disgustingly dirty – and by no means limp – comedy. Of course Rogen headlines the voice talent in this animated bratwurst fest, portraying Frank, the sausage on the hunt for the bun of his dreams, Brenda (Kristen Wiig). The pair is searching for the “Great Beyond”, a supposed promised land that grants all food an escape from their miserable residency at the local supermarket. However, all may not be as it seems, as “the imperishables” (lead by Bill Hader) propose that the Great Beyond isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Up against the stiff competition of Bad Neighbours and This Is the End , it’ll be hard to miss the point of this cheesy laugh-fest. The best way to get the most out of Sausage Party is to accept it for what it is – Toy Story for adults. Food comes to life, boys take bath salts in the comfort of their lounge rooms, and there’s a Pepper with quite the impressive military rank. You even get a few songs thrown in to add to the cacophonous chaos. If you’re hungry for a bad taste comedy, you’ll want a pizza this one. THE SHALLOWS

Woman vs. maneater.

I magine if Chrissie from Jaws hadn't been eaten in the opening scene and had instead climbed onto the nearby buoy and done whatever it took to survive. That pretty much sums up what to expect from The Shallows , in which Blake Lively wages a one-woman war against a Great White shark after she's chomped whilst surfing off a secluded beach in Mexico (in reality Lord Howe Island). Attacked only a few hundred yards from the shore, Mrs. Ryan Reynolds finds herself in a dead pool – a whale carcass in the vicinity means the shark won't be leaving anytime soon, and with high tide approaching, the rocky sanctuary she's managed to reach will soon be underwater. The possibility of a rescue is quickly

dashed when a pair of fellow surfers are taken by the shark, leaving her stranded with only a wounded seagull for company (which becomes a supporting character of sorts). Most of us would be in full panic mode by now, but Lively is a resourceful type, using her med school skills and earrings to seal the bite wound, and fashioning a pressure bandage from her wetsuit. She also times the circling shark to estimate the right moment to swim for her life. How she manages to stay beyond the reach of this hungry predator makes for a simple and efficient survival thriller that's slickly shot, including some pop-up graphics for Face Time and to indicate that the clock is ticking. There's also a creepy swim through a school of stinging jellyfish, and the CGI shark is mostly convincing. Some of it is implausible, particularly the climax, but the film works so effectively, you'll quickly forgive the odd lapse in logic. Just sit back, enjoy the ride, and be thankful this isn't happening to you. Decent shark movies are a rarity these days, and The Shallows

DAVID BRENT: LIFE ON THE ROAD

ALSO SCREENING IN SEPTEMBER

RELEASED: Now Showing DIRECTOR: Ricky Gervais CAST: Ricky Gervais, Jo Hartley, Doc Brown RATING: MA15+

A legend in his own mind.

It's been 13 years since we last caught up with David Brent, star of the BBC mockumentary series The Office . Ricky Gervais's excruciating comic creation has since fallen to the bottom of the corporate ladder following redundancy from Wernham Hogg, where he was top dog. Now he's a tampon sales rep chasing big dreams as a rock star. Cashing in his pension funds and taking unpaid leave, Brent hits the road with band Foregone Conclusion for a tour that will hopefully end with a recording contract, and needless to say it's a foregone conclusion that

the cringe factor will be dialled up to eleven. The world has become more politically correct but Brent hasn't, belting out songs like "Don't Make Fun of the Disabled" and "Native American" to the disbelief of a scant audience and the contempt of his bandmates. Fans of The Office will know exactly what to expect, but should note that this is strictly the David Brent show – don't expect to catch up with Tim, Gareth and Dawn. We do meet his new workmates at Lavichem, however, including kindred spirit Nigel (Tom Bennett), who manages to register in a film that's a showcase for Gervais, as does Doc Brown as the open-mike rapper whose promising career Brent has hijacked for his own delusional ends. Once again, the awkward humour comes less from Brent's abrasive persona than others reactions to it, as captured with candid precision by a documentary film crew. It's funny, squirm- inducing stuff, although a last minute segue into sentiment is unnecessary – we pity Brent already. Scott Hocking

Director Antoine Fuqua ( Training Day ) brings his flair for gritty action to the wild, wild west in this remake of John Sturges' 1960 classic. Denzel Washington leads the eponymous band of outlaws (including Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke), who've been hired to take down a corrupt industrialist who plans to plunder the town of Rose Krick. KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS

RELEASED: Now Showing DIRECTOR: Travis Knight CAST: Charlize Theron, Art Parkinson, Ralph Fiennes RATING: PG

More magic from Laika.

A supernatural instrument, talking animals and creepy aunts galore - Kubo slices in as the fourth addition to Laika Entertainment’s animated line- up, following Coraline and ParaNorman , and it's another gorgeously peculiar tale. Young Kubo (Art Parkinson) spends his days using his magical shamisen and origami to bring extraordinary stories to life in his small town. Much to the dismay of the story-devoted townsfolk, he never seems to provide an ending. But when he accidentally summons a vengeful spirit from the heavens, Kubo begins to live out the tales himself. Armed only with his mystical instrument, Kubo

and his allies – the protectively cynical Monkey (Charlize Theron) and the fearless yet childish Beetle (Matthew McConaughey) – embark on a journey to collect the three parts of his late father’s mystical armour, in order to defeat the spirit and the monsters that stand in his path. Kubo blows its Laika predecessors out of the water in terms of beauty. Stop-motion is a charming medium that the studio has dominated since 2009, and once again it creates a magnificent world to explore. But unfortunately many of the jokes don't quite land with an older audience, being predominantly aimed at kids. However, the film is not short of heartfelt moments. A surprising highlight comes in the form of the Sisters, voiced by Rooney Mara. If you're looking for some of that trademark Coraline creepiness, this is where you’ll find it – her spine-chilling laugh alone will haunt your dreams. Aside from the mildly flat jokes and generally predictable plot points, this is as magically charming as Laika's previous offerings, with the divine music of the shamisen bound to lift your spirits. Savannah Douglas

Originally called The Woods , until a surprise title change revealed it to be a sequel to the found-footage horror hit. With Adam Wingard ( You're Next ) directing, this could be scary stuff. Witching begins on Sept 15 . BLAIR WITCH
