SETTING

The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres over– looking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Diego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just minutes away as well. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their origins to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university, the University of Alcala, whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's style. Both institutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley.

THE CAMPUS

The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique insti– tutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USO has completed 11 major construction and expansion projects. A five-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage ( I ,I 00 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the uni– versity completed the 45 ,000 square foot Loma Hall, which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories. In 1990, the renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technology. ACADEMICS

USO enrolls more than 6,943 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units in– clude the College ofArts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size generally averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top I00 schools in the nation . STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, sym– posia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen outreach, and house building in Tijuana. The intramural program is also an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USO community partaking in intramural sports. ATHLETICS

The University of San Diego Swimming and Diving program has enjoyed a great deal of success since joining the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference in 1976. Toreros own all but one PCSC Relay record, most re- cently breaking the 400 Freestyle Relay mark with a 3:29.18 finish in 2002. There is 20 total events held at the PCSC Championships each year and USD stakes claim to nine conference records. Eight of those nine conference marks have come under fourth-year USD Head Coach Mike Keeler. In 2002 a disqualification in the 40-point 400 Medley Relay put the Toreros 40 points behind meet champion UC San Diego. The Torero relay teams fin– ished 1 st in four of five relay events on the day. In individual competition San Diego swimmers placed 1 st in 11 out of 20 events for the second straight season. "I am very proud of the effort but forth by this team at the 2002 championships," said Head Coach Mike Keeler. "We had a few unfortunate disqualifica-
