THE UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO SETTING

The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education . Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overl ooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean . The campus is named Al cala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spanish vi llage near Madrid - Al cala de Hena res. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university whose bui ldings became the inspiration for USD's architectural style . THE CAMPUS The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USO has completed nu– merous major construction and expansion projects. In 2000 the Jenny Craig Pavilion , a 5, 100-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USO volleyball

and basketball . The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice opened on the west end of campus, and the new Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology opened in fall , 2003. A five-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage (1,100 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped fountain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992 , the university completed the 45 ,000 square foot Loma Hall , which includes an expanded bookstore , a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratories.

ACADEMICS USO enrolls more than 7,200 students who have a choice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences , and the Schools of Business Administration , Education, Law and Nursing . Class size generally averages between 18-25 students with the student to teacher ratio being 18: 1. Over 97 percent of USD's full-time faculty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's colleges and universities, published by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top 100 schools in the nation . STUDENT LIFE Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's , concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more . Students participate in a wide range of volunteer projects such as adult literacy tutoring, senior citizen outreach , and house building in Tijuana . The intramural program is also an integral part of student life on cam– pus with over two-thirds of the USO community partaking in intramural sports.

DID YOU KNOW? The 150,000-square foot Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Tech– nology opened its doors this past fall, 2003. The new Center contains 73 state– of-the-art laboratory facilities for chemistry, biology, marine science and environmental studies, biochem– istry, physics and related sciences. Additionally, the building includes aquariums, an astronomy deck, an aviary, a greenhouse, and conference areas to accommodate gatherings of science-related groups and organiz– ations.

ATHLETICS The University of San Diego is a member of the West Coast Conference for nearly all sports and competes in 16 intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The football team just completed its 11th season in the Pioneer Football League . Women's sports include : basketball , cross country, rowing , soccer, softball , swim– ming , tennis and volleyball. Softball joined the Pacific Coast Softball Conference for its inaugural season in 2003. Men's sports include : baseball , basketba ll, cross country, golf, football , rowing , soccer and tennis . Since 1988 , USO has had one national champion ; 1 national team final ist; 17conference team championships ; 24 Conference Players of the Year; 32 Academic All-Americans ; 33 Conference Coaches of the Year; 40 NCAA post-season appearances; four West Coast Con– ference Scholar Athletes of the Year; and 35 All-America selections . The 2002-2003 basketball season marked the third straight year that the University hosted the West Coast Conference Basketball Championships at the Jenny Craig Pavilion . The USO men's basketball team won the 2003 WCC Basketball Tournament and the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. This past fall , 2003 both soccer teams and women 's volleyball advanced to the NCAA Tournament play.

Torero comes from the spani sh term toro , the bull, and from the word torear, to fig ht bulls. All of the contestants in the ring are ca lled toreros. 2004 TORERO SOFTBALL OUTLOOK

TOREROS ENTER 2004 CAMPAIGN WITH OPTIMISM With the return of 13 letterwinners from last year's ball club, including six position starters and four pitchers, 3rd-year head coach Melissa McElvain believes the Torero softball program has established a foundation for success. The team 's positive atttitude, team chemistry, hard work, enthusiasm and determination will result in a successful and exciting softball season. This year's squad has united to form a strong, talented, cohesive team that is ready for the challenges that lie ahead. The senior class will provide leadership, experience and determination to this year's squad. For the second straight year Cindy McGee (Burbank, CA) has been tabbed the team captain by her teammates. Jennifer Delpit (Palos Verdes, CA), a clutch hitter who is projected to hit in the clean-up spot, is the returning leader in RBI (16) from a year ago. Rounding out the seniors is infielder Ashley Miller (Salinas, CA) along with pitchers Anna Russell (Granada Hills, CA) and Allison Williams (Danville, CA). The junior class will be led by Kim Delpit (Palos Verdes, CA) who will start at second. Last year's co-Defensive Player of the Year, along with Ashlee Nunes, Delpit is a

Captain Cindy McGee third-year player who is actually a redshirt sophomore. She is a strong hitter who has the ability to get on base and drive in runs. Additionally, she is a good contact hitter who can also hit for power. Junior outfielder Francesca Ramos (San Diego, CA) and outfielder Taryn Nagata (Honolulu, HI) will also be competing for playing time in the Torero line-up. USD's sophomore class gained valuable experience a year ago that should pay dividends in 2004. Gina McFarland (Santa Rosa, CA), the team's MVP and Rookie of the Year in 2003, is the club's top returning hitter and pitcher. A 2nd Team All-PCSC selection, she batted .29 1 with 7 doubles and 7 RBI. She also pitched 133.0 innings, finishing with a team-best 2.42 ERA and 9 complete games. Sara Mason (Santa Rosa, CA), last year's Offensive Player of the Year and Coaches Award recipient, will start at catcher and also see action at third base. She started 45 of 47 games while batting .258 with 11 runs, 8 doubles, 2 homers and 9 RBI. Ashlee Nunes (Roseville, CA), co-Defensive Player of the Year, returns at shortstop where she has great range. Nunes and Kim Delpit will give the Toreros a solid defense up the middle. She' ll also hit at the top of the line-up and supply excellent speed on the base paths. Additonal sophomores include pitchers Erin Harmonson (San Diego, CA) and Kari Lohse (Orland, CA), along with Marissa Merchain (La Mirada, CA) who will see action at both catcher and third base. Last year Harmonson was second on the team in innings pitched (] 10.0) and complete games (7), but first in strikeouts (55) . For the second straight year McElvain has brought in a solid freshman class that will add strength and depth to the line-up,

both offensively and defensively. The four newcomers include - Alicia Massei, from Chino Hills, CA (Ayala HS), will provide offensive power to the line-up and also contribute defensively at first base and third base; Christina Haake, from Goleta, CA (Dos Pueblos HS), will provide offense with her bat and will also strengthen the pitching staff and outfield defensively ; Rebekah Bradord , from Turlock, CA (Turlock HS), adds speed and versatility to the team along with hitting from both sides of the plate; and Danielle Treiber, from Villa Park, CA (Mater Dei HS) , is a "true" utility player who can play every infield position as well as outfield and catcher. She is a very raw hitter with tremendous potential. This year 's schedule, once again , will be very challenging. It features contests with Oregon State, Syracuse, San Diego State, Colorado State, Princeton and Dartmouth. The Toreros will also play an exhibition game against the Canadian Olympic Team (Feb. 12th) as Canada prepares for the 2004 games in Athens, Greece. USO hopes to take advantage of the fact that they will be playing a lot more home games in 2004. The Toreros will also host two tournaments (see brackets on page 13) in late February and March. The Toreros enter their second year as a member of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. Thi s year's league is much stronger from top to bottom than a year ago. The PCSC championship is wide open and the Toreros hope to make a run at the title. The PCSC expects to receive an automatic bid to a post-season Regional Tournament beginning in the 2005 season.

MELISSA McELVAIN, Head Coach 3rd Season Melissa McElvain enters her third year as USD's Head Softball Coach. In 2003 the Toreros joined the Pacific Coast Softball Conference with LMU, Saint Mary 's, Santa Clara, CS Sacramento and Portland State. Her second season was highlighted by their 7-3 win over 20th-ranked Oregon State, as well as back-to-back wins at the SDSU Tourney. The 2002 season was highlighted by the team 's upset of 10th-ranked Cal State Fullerton. Twelve Toreros were named to the Western Intercollegiate All-Academic Squad, and two Toreros earned All-WISL Tourney hon– ors. A 1999 graduate of Oklahoma State, she earned All-Big XII honors while playing catcher and second base. McElvain (Turley) led the Cowgirls to three post-season appearances and a third place finish in the 1998 Women 's College World Series. While at Oklahoma State, she earned All-Big XII academic honors wh ile attain- , ing a Business Administration degree with an emphasis in Marketing. Additionally, she earned the OSU Commu- • nity Service Contribution Award ( 1997-98); the NCAA Leadership Award ( 1998); and was a four-year SAAC Representative, including being the SAAC President her senior campaign. McElvain gained international experience while playing for the California Hurricanes in 1996. She travelled to Vancouver, Canada to compete versus Olympic teams such as Canada, Cuba, Italy and China. Bruce Adams, I'' assistant, begins hi s first full season on the Torero staff after begining as a volunteer coach mid-way through the 2003 campaign. Adams brings an elite level of playing experience and a wealth of knowledge to the USD softball program. Hi s main responsibilities will be with the outfielders and hitters. Bruce comes to USD after spending two years at Mt. San Jacinto College. Prior to MSJC, Bruce tallied three years at South Western College, one year at San Diego State and nine years at his alma mater, Madison High School. A distinguished player as well , he played for the Vista Bombers Fastpitch club ASA Runner-up National Champions in 1991 , plus two ISC world tournament appearances in 1992-93. He later joined the Long Beach Painters in 1996 and experienced softball Nirvana, playing against the top teams in the country with the best players in the world. Long Beach folded in 1999 and Bruce spent recent summers playing in Arizona and San Luis Obispo where he added 5 more World Tournament Appearances. Bruce grew up in San Diego where he attended Madison High School , a golfer he played at Pt Loma Nazarene and San Diego State. Bruce, who is sing le, resides in Clairemont. Amy Lopez begins her second season on the USO staff as the pitching coach. No stranger to USO, she was a two-year performer on the USD softball team for the 2000 and 1999 campaigns. She played her first two years at Oklahoma State where she was a teammate ofTorero head coach Melissa McElvain. In her two years at USD, Amy won 35 games and collected 9 saves while compiling a 1.43 ERA in 450 innings of work. She also pitched 53 complete games, including 32 in 1999. Including her two seasons at Oklahoma State, Amy won 57 career co llegiate games. A native San Diegan, Amy prepped at nearby Helix High School. At Helix she was a three-time MVP and two– time team captain. She also earned Grossmont Player of the Year and East County Player of the Year honors. Amy and her husband , Lance, reside in the Mission Valley area of San Diego. Jennifer Bridges begins her first season on the USD staff. No stranger to USD, Jennifer played for the softball program and currently works at USD as an Executive Assistant. A 200 I USD graduate, Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, along with a minor in Business Admini stration. While playing for the Torero softball program Jennifer played catcher, third base and first base. She recently earned hi s Master of Science degree in Physical Education from Azusa Pacific University. Her coaching experience includes assisting the softball programs at the University of San Diego High School and Whittier Co ll ege. She is from Downey, California in the Los Angeles County area.

Batted a team-best .284 with 42 hits, 8 doubles, and 13 RBI. Totaled nine multi-hit games with 4-for-4 outing against Saint Mary's, and a 3-for-4 game with 2 doub les and 4 RBI against Chapman. 2001: Appeared in 48 games with 46 starts. Batted .236 with 8 runs,

7 doubles, 2 triples, I homer and team-best 20 RBIs. Collected eight multi-hit games with best outing coming against BYU: 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 doubles. Belted a homer at UC San Diego (April 4th). Also pitched in 23 games with IO starts and 3 complete games. Had a record of 5-8 with a 3.28 ERA. Twice recorded six strikeouts (Portland State & UC Riverside). Selected team's Rookie of the Year and WISL All-Academic. Prep: Attended Peninsula High School and lettered in softball. Earned Athlete of the Year honors and Most Outstanding Pl ayer award in her senior campaign . In her junior season, she was named Best Offensive Player while batting .350. Delpit played travel softball for the Southern California Blazers.

Personal: Born in Northridge, CA on June 19, 1982. Parents are Sue and Larry Delpit. Jennifer was also recruited by Sienna College and Seton Hall University... Chose USO for its academics, location and softball program. History major.

Earned All-WISL honors. Finished 7- 18 wth team-best 2.95 ERA. Complete-game 2-hitter with 4 strikeouts in 2-1 win over BYU. Also tossed complete– game two-hitters against Concordia and LMU with Toreros on losing end. Season-best 6 strikeouts against LMU on April 26th. 2001: Appeared in 27 contests with 16 starts on the mound and finished with record of 6-9. Ranked second on the team with a 2.79 ERA, and totaled 44 strikeouts in 98.0 innings of work.

Notched 7 strikeouts in 8 innings of work against LMU (April 29). Earned three straight wins against Wright State, Eastern Illinois and Santa Clara in a nine day span . WISL All-Academic squad pick. Prep: Prepped at Harvard-Westlake where she lettered four years in softball. In her senior season, she recorded a 22-2 win-loss record from the pitching circle, a 0.90 earned run average and a .3 15 batting average while leading her team to a Mission League Championship and a CIF semifinal appearance. 14 The Pacific Coast Softball Conference - A League Of Their Own The NCAA Division I Management Council Administrative Committee announced the approval of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) for Division I conference membership in women 's softball on Oct. 17, 2002. The 2003 softball season marked the inaugu– ral year of the PCSC, with Loyola Marymount winning the conference's first title. Wendy Guthrie, former Associate Athletics Director and Senior

Woman Administrator at the University of San Diego and current professor in the Sport Management Master's program at the University of San Francisco, enters her second year as commissioner of the new conference. Dr. Bill Husak, Director of Athletics at Loyola Marymount, will continue to serve the role of president of the conference officers. The conference is comprised of six schools: Sacramento State, Loyola Marymount, Portland State, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and San Diego. Prior to joining the PCSC, the schools were members of the Western Athletic Conference, Western Intercol– legiate Softball League and the Big West Conference for softball league play. One of the objectives of the PCSC is to provide the teams with an opportunity for an automatic qualifying bid to NCAA Tournament play. The conference will be eligible to apply for the automatic bid in the 2005 season. "I have been impressed with the diligence of the institutions' administrators in forming thi s conference, the collegiality among the softball coaches, and the student-athletes' desire for competitive success in order to bring the Pacific Coast Softball Conference to national recognition," Guthrie said. "The creation of the PCSC was a result of a clear need for a quality championship experience for the student-athletes, and one that would realize the opportunity for these players and coaches to have access to the NCAA Tournament."
