Welcome back to Kingspan Stadium, the home of Ulster Rugby, where tonight the Ulster squad welcome Connacht for Round 6 of the Guinness PRO14. Following last weekend’s disappointing defeat to a strong Munster side, players and supporters alike will be eager to put their best foot forward for this evening’s encounter. Connacht will also be looking to bounce back from defeat to provincial rivals Leinster, which is sure to provide an edge to this game. After three consecutive weeks on the road we look forward to a rousing atmosphere for Ulster’s return to Kingspan Stadium. We are known for our warm welcome and I am sure that the Connacht Rugby squad and their travelling supporters will experience nothing less from their visit. Finally, on behalf of Kingspan, I would like to wish the Ulster Rugby squad and management team the very best of luck. To Ulster’s committed fans, enjoy the game, lead the way and help ensure that this is an evening to remember!

We hope that all those attending from the West will enjoy our hospitality and their stay in Belfast. Since our last home game we have been to South Africa, bringing back seven points from a win and an exciting draw. Given the injuries and pre-match illness which the squad suffered before the second match against the Cheetahs, that was a satisfactory outcome. We also played Munster in Thomond Park suffering a heavy defeat having again sustained injuries to key players. With some of our experienced players returning, we hope for an improved result this evening. The trip to South Africa was quite an experience for all who travelled. Due to financial constraints and the fact that the PRO14 league has a contract with Qatar Airways, the journey was somewhat indirect and an endurance test for all concerned. Having visited both Port Elizabeth and Bloemfontein it is clear that South Africa is a country with many problems and there is a huge contrast between conditions in different parts of the same city. However, the home teams were extremely hospitable and we were well looked after. It is a shame that the crowds were so small in two very impressive stadiums. The tour provided a great opportunity for the players to bond and for the new players and those coming through the Academy ranks to get to know each other. Having mixed with them and watched them interact, it was obvious that they are a contented squad prepared to work hard to do what is necessary to advance themselves and Ulster Rugby. The same applies to the coaches and the other support staff.

A special mention must go to Richard Finlay, who worked tirelessly to keep the supporters at home up to date with what was happening. It was especially pleasing to see the squad becoming involved with the local community, interacting with disadvantaged children from the townships in conjunction with the Mosamaria charity which helps orphans of HIV victims in Bloemfontein. Back home, the Inter-provincial Series for the Women, U18 Girls and Age Grade teams came to a close with limited success. The U19 team was unfortunate to lose the deciding match against Leinster in the closing minutes. The A team started their campaign with two losses but they have won the last two matches with encouraging performances from promising young players. We wish them well as the competition continues. The domestic season is now in full swing with the Senior Cup having reached the semi-final stage and two rounds having been played in the Junior Cup. The All Ireland League got underway for the women and for the lower league teams last week. Congratulations to those who got off to a flying start and best wishes to all those involved in a full programme of fixtures this weekend. As always, we thank our sponsors and fans for their continued support and hope that everyone enjoys the match and the atmosphere at Kingspan Stadium back under Friday night lights. SUFTUM! In the Guinness PRO14 we celebrate the great diversity that exists across our five countries, but the heritage and passion ingrained in our derbies is hard to beat which is why Round 6 will get the pulses racing. Derbies in Ireland and Wales headline what is a terrific line-up of Championship fixtures. The action kicks off on Friday night in Belfast with Ulster hosting Connacht, then Saturday’s fixtures see Scarlets and Ospreys duelling for supremacy in Llanelli, Dragons seeking to down Cardiff Blues in Newport before Leinster and Munster go toe-to-toe in Dublin. These games mean so much to our clubs and to their fans, but for the players there is international selection to consider as these games can count for so much when the likes of Warren Gatland and Joe Schmidt sit down to pick their squads for the November Test window. The Championship has kicked off a serious pace this year and the level of competition has reached new heights across the opening five rounds. Every team has tasted defeat and only the Toyota Cheetahs are left in search of their first victory. The South Africans have come mightily close in the past two weeks with Ulster securing a late draw in Bloemfontein and then Cardiff Blues striking late to claim the spoils in the Welsh capital last weekend. Franco Smith takes his men to Edinburgh on Friday night where they will face Richard Cockerill’s team and it should prove a fascinating encounter between two sides who reached the Guinness PRO14 Final Series last season, but are yet to hit their top form so far this season. If Edinburgh and Cheetahs presence in the knock-out stages were a surprise last season, then Benetton Rugby could prove to be this year’s wildcard. Sitting fourth in Conference B, the Italians have a run of three games at home before their tour to South Africa and they could be in a very promising position by the time they play their first derby of the season against Zebre in December. I include Zebre, too, when I say that teams from Italy provide a serious challenge for their opponents now and their improvements have only benefitted our tournament to make it more competitive and unpredictable. Retaining that consistency will be key, as it will be for our South African clubs, too. The Cheetahs are regrouping after their initial success and the Isuzu Southern Kings, now with financial backing from their new ownership group, are showing signs of improvement and hopefully they will follow the path of Benetton and Zebre in really adding to the quality of the Guinness PRO14. Of course every year we see new faces emerge that add to the calibre of the Championship and already it’s been exciting to see the likes of Adam Hastings of Glasgow Warriors, Luca Sperandio of Benetton, Rabs Maxwane of the Cheetahs, Alex Wootton of Munster and Owen Watkin at Ospreys beginning to flourish. After today’s game you can keep up with the storylines written by these players and their teams by switching on or logging into our network of broadcast partners – Premier Sports, eir sport, Super Sport, TG4, S4C or DAZN – where live matches and highlights are always on offer. Close to 300 internationals played in the Guinness PRO14 last season with 76 of those making their Test debuts during the campaign which speaks to the great health and sustainability of our clubs. Naturally, everyone is fighting to reach the Guinness PRO14 Final at Celtic Park which will mark another historic chapter for our Championship as the showpiece game is being played at a non-rugby stadium for the first time. To get access to the best offers check our official accounts on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter or visit bit.ly/glasgow2019 to get your tickets. Enjoy the game, Martin Anayi Chief Executive Officer

This week we caught up with out-half Billy Burns, who moved to Ulster from Gloucester in the summer. Burns is clearly settling in well to the Ulster setup, and despite the disappointing game at the weekend, his energy is infectious and he’s full of chat… B I L L Y B U R N S A NEW CLUB, A NEW COMPETITION, A NEW CITY.

“Last week was a tough one for us all,” says Burns. “We had a good week in training and a good plan in place but we ended up off in all aspects of our game and you can’t afford to do that against anyone, never mind Munster at Thomond Park. We are massively disappointed but the good thing about rugby is that we get another chance this weekend to right some of those wrongs. “We lacked energy and a bit of spark in attack and defence. Ultimately, our discipline wasn’t great and we gave away penalties, and against any top side you are going to get punished. It was hugely disappointing but we have a week to refocus and train hard and hopefully we can overcome those negatives this week.” Another inter-provincial challenge lies ahead against Connacht, who went down 20 points to 3 to Leinster last weekend. “Connacht are coming off the back of a defeat as well so they will be out to prove something too. They are showing signs of being a really good team on both sides of the ball, so we know it’s going to be a massive challenge and one we are looking forward to. We are going to focus on ourselves and get our game plan sorted and hopefully that will put us in good stead come Friday night.” Having spent three weeks on the road, the squad are looking forward to having a few home fixtures… “It’s nice to be back playing at home. Obviously, we had the trip to South Africa,

which was great, but it will be good to get back home to Kingspan Stadium, hopefully in front of a big crowd and get our season back on track.” Having progressed through the Gloucester Academy, Billy’s background is primarily in the English Premiership so the PRO14 Championship is something new for him. “I have loved PRO14 rugby so far,” explains Burns. “It is obviously very different to what I’m used to. It has been quite a manic start to the season with two fixtures away in South Africa, but the trip was great to get away with the boys and get to know them better. “Before last weekend, we started well, last Saturday was a bit of a reality check, you don’t want to be losing by big numbers too often. But that has been a wakeup call and we’re looking forward to the next challenge.” As well as playing at a new club, in a new championship, Billy has also had to get used to living in a new city… “I’m really enjoying being at Ulster and in Belfast, it’s a great place with a great group of boys. My girlfriend has just moved over and is settling in well, so we are loving it. It is very different to what I’m used to, but part of the reason why I moved here was to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone. I have settled in well and hopefully I can continue to build and perform over the course of the season.”

With an Inter-pro with Connacht at home tonight, and Europe hoving into immediate view next weekend, Ulster’s competitive rugby season is rapidly shifting through the gears. R O D N A W N

OCTOBER OFFERS CURTAIN OF OPP

He will not have dismissed the display at Thomond Park as a ‘blip’, or blamed the away thumping on those 16 members of the squad confined to the treatment room: the performance, more than the defeat, will have irked the Englishman, who has made a very positive impact in his first month at the helm. He’s been unafraid to give the younger, more inexperienced players their chance, and given those with more distinguished service the opportunity to stake long-terms claims to their positions. The mirror will have been very firmly held to the faces of everyone in the squad this week, not just the 23 on duty in Limerick. Munster provided a reality check of unwanted proportions, but as the Head Coach said of tonight’s second Inter-pro in a week – against the side he served so well as player and coach – ‘we go again’. McFarland doesn’t deal in cliché so any notions of redemption will have been couched in far more pragmatic and demanding terms. But against a Connacht team firmly beaten by Leinster last weekend in Galway, but never outclassed, the terraces and stands of Kingspan Stadium this evening will expect to see a strengthened home side restore some very bruised pride. In truth, October is a key month in the rugby year. The PRO14, the Champions Cup and imminent Autumn International

For Ulster the Guinness PRO14 campaign under new Head Coach Dan McFarland began with dramatic late wins and an unconvincing but unbeaten, exhausting trek to South Africa. Then came Thomond Park last Saturday. A thumping defeat against fierce rivals who had simply too much firepower and nous for an Ulster side undermined by injuries, certainly, but embarrassingly overwhelmed. McFarland ‘fronted up’, as he always does, and admitted that in all departments his side – which included many of the younger crop of recruits and Academy players – Munster held the upper hand for all but a few minutes in Limerick. All sorts of unwanted records were written last weekend, and for supporters the 57-point margin was at once shocking and yet unsurprising. Munster fielded a team loaded with top-class internationals, especially up front, while the visitors’ daunting cause became mission impossible There was a sense in McFarland’s post- match observations that, while he may have been disappointed with the scale of the loss, and definitely unhappy to see some of the early-season promise in the tackle unravel, he wasn’t entirely shocked by the difference in quality between a proven, steeled group and the line-up he fielded in Munster. with the early departures of Iain Henderson and John Cooney.

calendar demands the presence of frontline combatants, and the probable sight of Rory Best and Jacob Stockdale returning to the white jersey will vastly encourage the faithful. If Marcell Coetzee is also fit again and ready to build on a few emphatic ball-carrying displays in the back row that would lift expectations. Connacht arrives at Kingspan Stadium after a feisty encounter with Leinster, and new Head Coach Andy Friend is, like McFarland, determined to fashion a squad which is committed, consistent and which can recapture the resilience which saw the Province cast off its ‘whipping boy’ tag and win the Guinness PRO12 under Pat Lam’s demanding leadership. Friend is very much his own man, and having worked with Eddie Jones in the Australian system, and under Dean Richards at Harlequins, he brings a wealth of international experience to the Sportsground. He’ll hope his skipper Jarrad Butler is fit to resume in the back row, and in Quinn Roux and Ultan Dillane he has a powerful pairing at lock, while Tom Farrell and Bundee Aki have much to offer in midfield, especially if scrum-half Kieran Marmion and his partner Jack Carty are allowed the time and space to dictate the tempo. Ulster under McFarland will have confronted the realities of last week’s surrender in Limerick, but there’ll be perspective too. The team is contending in its PRO14 Conference, it has confronted uneasy truths before, and it will be determined to cull a valuable, morale-boosting win before the visit of Leicester in Europe next week. This is Ulster in development mode, but it is a squad not without immediate and longer-term ambition. Given evidence of that on the pitch the supporters in Kingspan Stadium will offer unequivocal backing. It’s Friday night in the Guinness PRO14. The nights have drawn in, but the curtain of opportunity is there to be pulled wide open. RTUNITY

TOM FARRELL OPPOSITION THREE TO WATCH

One of the breakout stars of Connacht’s 2017/18 Guinness PRO14 season, Tom Farrell made a big impression alongside Ireland centre Bundee Aki in Connacht’s midfield. Making 23 appearances last term, Farrell picked up 35 points – including the winning try in Connacht’s 20-16 win over Munster last October. After learning his trade at Leinster’s academy, the 6ft 2in centre spent a brief spell in England appearing for Bedford Blues before returning to Guinness PRO14 action at Connacht. By January, Farrell was breaking records – topping the charts for the most carries (156), offloads (34) and defenders beaten (44) inside his first 14 appearances of the season. With another year of experience under his belt, Farrell certainly get the pulses racing in the stands at the Sportsground. After announcing his switch to Galway back in March – 25-year-old Kyle Godwin has had to bide his time to get started at Connacht after choosing to move on from Super Rugby side Brumbies. The Zimbabwean-born centre made his Super Rugby debut for Western Force at just 19 years old, but has since been dealt an unfair hand with a series of niggling injuries halting his progress. Recognised in 2014 as Western Force’s most outstanding player, the 6ft 1in Australian earnt his first international cap against France in November 2016. Godwin will bring a wealth of experience and talent to the Guinness PRO14 after making 621 running metres in 11 games last season. With an eye on returning to the international fold, Godwin will be a man on a mission next season as he gets to grip with a new league. Following the retirement of Connacht captain John Muldoon, Copeland has taken up the mantle of leading Connacht’s back row after a summer move from rivals Munster. Capable of playing anywhere across the back, the 30-year-old has demonstrated his versatility and athletic ability since breaking onto the stage at Cardiff Blues in 2012. With one Ireland international appearance to his name, Copeland brings a vast amount of experience to a Connacht side keen to find the form that saw them lift the title 2016. Despite missing much of the 2015 season with a shoulder injury, the 6ft 5in Wexford-born back has shown he can capably deliver in the scoring department – going over the line on four occasions last season. With league record appearance maker Muldoon retiring to take up the position of defensive coach at Bristol Bears – Copeland has mighty steps to fill if he is to match Muldoon’s exploits.

“It’s over three months since my injury and I’m really excited to be out on the pitch this weekend against Connacht,” says Jacob Stockdale, in anticipation of his first appearance of the season. RARING TO GO

“The more you play, whether at PRO14, European or International level, the more you realise that you’re not the finished article. There are always going to be guys who are better than you at certain things but it’s about making sure you are racing against yourself, making yourself better and not worrying about other guys.” As a self-proclaimed perfectionist himself, Stockdale admits that he’s enjoying the detailed and technical approach of new Head Coach Dan McFarland: “I really like Dan’s philosophy in coaching; that everyone needs to know their stuff and do their stuff well. He brings a lot of enthusiasm into his coaching and gets the guys excited to play rugby, which is the most important thing.” With Connacht smarting from a 3-20 reversal at the hands of Leinster last weekend, the 22-year-old is not expecting an easy return to PRO14 action, and is wary of the threat the Galway-based side will pose. “It will be tough, as all inter-pros are,” he said. “These games bring a natural edge with them, a higher intensity of play. “Connacht attack very well and have a really good structure. Their forwards get into position very well and run really good lines. They are never easy to defend against as they are unpredictable and can do anything on the night. It will be a big test for the team, and for me personally.”

The Ulster and Ireland winger has been sidelined since picking up a hamstring injury during the summer, but has worked extremely hard to return for what is a crucial time for the Province. “The injury has given me the chance to get myself in good shape and to recover from a long season,” says Stockdale, who enjoyed a breakthrough season at international level that saw him win the Six Nations Player of the Championship award. “I’m back down to earth after last season, a few months stuck in a gym underground will do that,” he joked, while reflecting on the last campaign. “I’ve worked hard to get fitter, stronger and faster than I would have been able to if I’d gone straight back into rugby. Obviously, I would rather have been out playing matches every week, not sitting on the sidelines, but there are positives you can take from it.” When asked whether he feels any pressure to repeat last season’s exploits, the Lisburn man says his focus is on making day-to-day improvements to his game… “To be honest, I try not to think about it too much. Last year, I set my goals at the start of the season and one was to get on the bench for a Six Nations game. It panned out differently so you just don’t know how it’s going to go, but my aim is to focus on getting better every week, every time I step on the pitch - that’s the mentality I’ve always tried to play with.
