T
he mission of the International Space Station — at $100 billion the
world’s most expensive created object ever — is the collection and
transmission of information that will contribute to the betterment of
life on Earth.
The work of the scientists and other experts on board the orbiting
laboratory is heavily dependent on data communications, currently being
upgraded to a rate approaching 3.125 gigabytes (GB) per second per
channel. Fortunately for those involved in such large endeavours, makers
of data communications cable have a lofty aim of their own: uninterrupted
connectivity.
These cable specialists, and their suppliers, need no warnings about the
insupportable results of poor or unreliable or broken transmission; nor any
instruction in refractory materials, high speeds, workplace constraints.
The products and services reviewed in this section are offered by industry
professionals who see no objection to the cliché of a connected-up world.
They are working to keep it that way.
