Insulating with TPU
Huntsman Polyurethanes has developed a new fire-retardant,
halogen-free thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that complies with
current safety standards for cable jacketing materials used in the
IT and consumer electronics sector.
Complying with key criteria set out in the European RoHS
directive and US VW1 standard, Irogran
®
A95P5003DP meets
demand for a durable cabling material that is free from hazardous
substances. Far safer in the event of a fire than conventional
materials like PVC and brominated flame-retardants, Irogran
A95P5003DP is a low-smoke solution that is easy to process.
Irogran A95P5003DP can be extruded at high speeds on existing
PVC processing equipment and has a good surface quality. This
makes it ideal for use in cable power systems. Also available
from Huntsman are TPUs to suit automotive, telecommunication,
automation and offshore applications.
Huntsman’s TPUs can be used to encase cable and wire in
highly flexible materials that meet the most stringent mechanical
standards, can be easily transported, and provide robust
protection against extreme environmental conditions.
Franz Michel, TPU account manager, mid-Europe at Huntsman
Polyurethanes said: “The European cabling market is evolving
rapidly. New legislation is impacting on the materials and
manufacturing techniques used in many sectors.
“In consumer electronics, many of the larger equipment
producers have publicly committed to the elimination of vinyl
plastic (PVC) and brominated flame-retardants (BFR) from
cables. These changes are driving manufacturers to develop long-term partnerships with trusted raw material suppliers that
understand the challenges and can offer compliant, high-performance products that meet new mechanical, safety and
environmental standards.”

New elastomers for wire
and cable needs
Based on ultra-high molecular weight PVC, Sunprene elastomers from
A Schulman possess many rubber-like qualities, while offering thermoplastic
processing, recyclability, and cost effectiveness compared with thermoset
EPDM rubber and traditional thermoplastic elastomers. As a result, they provide
exceptional tear and abrasion resistance, high flex fatigue, and excellent low
temperature brittleness. The materials can be customised to meet a broad range
of performance requirements.
“Sunprene Elastomers are a high-performance, economical alternative to
thermoset EPDM rubber and traditional thermoplastic elastomers,” said Lee Pfaffle,
business manager, engineered plastics of A Schulman. “On cost, processing
and performance, Sunprene Elastomers are an excellent solution for a variety of
industrial, speciality wire and cable, and heavy truck applications.”
Sunprene Elastomers are available in two series. The first series is specifically
formulated for extrusion applications and has hardness ranges from Shore 35A to
85A durometer, and a specific gravity range between 1.20 and 1.29.
The other series, designed for both injection moulding and extrusion applications,
has hardness ranges from Shore 57A to 65A Durometer, and a specific gravity
range between 1.22 and 1.27.
