Rules for determining fructan type
1.
DP 3.6-4 (CF = 1.233, #1 in Table 2-3 in Part 2) - Presence of GF
3
and GF
4
with the absence of peaks after ~36
minutes.
2.
DP 5.49-10 (CF = 1.0679, #2 in Table 2-3 in Part 2) - Presence of both GF
3
and GF
4
, along with peaks after ~36
minutes.
3.
DP 11-50 (CF= 0.9526, #3 in Table 2-3 in Part 2) - Absence of GF
3
and GF
4
and presence of peaks after ~ 36
minutes.
Additional Observations
1.
Absence of significant peaks after ~5 minutes means scFOS (DP 3.6). See Figure 1-2 for an example.
2.
Oligofructose containing materials derived from the partial hydrolysis of chicory inulin often display a
characteristic peak with significant tailing at ~ 5 minutes. See Figure 1-3 for an example.
3.
Presence of significant peaks after ~36 minutes means it cannot be scFOS or oligofructose. Contains some higher
DP inulin type material. See Figure 1-4 for an example.
Example determinations
1.
Figures 1-5a and 1-5b show an example of product #5 (SPIFAN matrix Placebo Child Formula Powder). As
shown in Figure 1-5b there are no significant peaks after 36 minutes as is shown in Synergy 1 or HP therefore it
must belong to the lowest average DP range.
2.
Figure 1-6 shows powdered milk based adult powder containing Synergy 1. This can be seen by the presence of
both GF
3
/GF
4
as well as peaks after 36 minutes.
3.
Figure 1-7 shows a powdered infant formula containing GOS that was spiked with HP. This can be confirmed by
the absence of GF
3
/GF
4
as well as peaks after 36 minutes.
