DAY
2
MORNING
HIT THE GROUND RUNNING! Or walk-
ing, or bicycling… Greater Portland has
an interwoven trail system that traverses
woods, oceanside paths, rivers, and city
streets to safely explore the region off the
beaten paths. [p. 31]
AFTERNOON
EAT—The culinary scene starts early in
the day as many breakfast and lunch spots
have national followings, from classic
favorites like fish ‘n’ chips to Portland-
created “Italians.” [p. 36-43]
DRINK—Most area craft breweries,
distilleries, wineries, and coffee
roasteries offer tours and tastings to
quench any thirst. [p. 26-27, 36-37]
BE MERRY—Retail therapy keeps visitors
smiling in downtown Portland or Freeport,
in the mall, or in boutique shops nestled in
surrounding towns. [p. 53-60]
EVENING
DINE—Confirm your reservations for your
latest guilty pleasure and relax as one of
the area’s award-winning chefs rolls out
their latest innovation and pairings to
dazzle the taste buds. [p. 39-43]
NIGHTLIFE—In Greater Portland, this
can mean clubbing in the Old Port, taking
in a live band, all-night shopping at L.L.
Bean, ice skating, dancing, skiing, a play,
billiards, a hidden speakeasy, a comedy
show, sitting by the sea, an art museum,
strolling a quiet neighborhood, fishing,
a beach bonfire, rock climbing, people
watching from a bench, and so much
more. [p. 18-34]
There’s much more to Greater Portland than lobsters and lighthouses.
TGIF—Every Friday night, the Portland
Museum of Art is open for free 5pm-9pm.
Art Walks, featuring performers, artists,
and musicians, take over Portland’s Arts
District the First Friday of each month.
Additionally, the Children’s Museum
& Theatre of Maine offers discounted
admission 5pm-8pm, and the Institute of
Contemporary Art is free as well. Many
galleries host opening exhibits welcoming
patrons with hors d’oeuvres.
Free outdoor concerts in parks and
inexpensive pubs exude music nightly.
Parks in Scarborough, South Portland,
Westbrook, and throughout Portland
host open-air shows during the
summer, including the Stars & Stripes
Spectacular, Portland Pop’s July Fourth
concert. In Freeport, L.L. Bean features
national headliners at free summer
concerts on their campus green. [p. 44]
The Cobblestone streets of downtown
Portland’s Old Port are lined with the
best of Maine-owned businesses. Rebuilt
after the fire of 1866 that destroyed the
city, these brick and cast iron buildings
create an authentic downtown shopping
experience.
Freeport blends high-end retail shopping
with an authentic New England village.
