VISIT PORTLAND / 61

PORTLAND

Portland is a city that works hard

and plays even harder, all in a

relaxed setting. Though smaller

than some of its east coast

rivals, this gem of a city has a

world-class dining scene, a truly

magnificent art museum, and

plenty of places to play

outdoors. Its small scale,

accessible waterfront, fine

architecture, and creative vibe

have propelled Portland to the

top of many national lists of best

places to vacation and live.

Portland is the name you’re familiar with, but the 15-mile

radius surrounding Maine’s largest metro area provides

access to the tranquil natural beauty the state is renowned

for—as well as great dining, shopping, and outdoor

recreation. Our diverse communities, described on the

next pages, each accent and complement Portland. So

get out and about, and welcome to the neighborhood.

CASCO BAY +

CALENDER ISLANDS

Named because there was once

reputed to be 365 of them

scattered along the southern

Maine coast, the nearby Calendar

Islands offer beaches, scenic

vistas, and a markedly slower pace

of life. Bicycling is a popular way

to explore these communities

which can be reached by ferry or

sea taxi. Enjoy a special dining

experience surrounded by the

waters of the Atlantic, as the sun

sets over Portland.
