COUNTY

The Crown of Maine pro-

of miles of wilderness trails.

Notable paddles include

the Allagash Wilderness

Waterway and the

easternmost section of the

impressive Northern Forest

Canoe Trail. At the south-

eastern end of Aroostook

County is the Grand Lake

chain of lakes, and further

north visitors will encounter

world class hunting,

fishing, and boating on the

St. John River.

HIGHLANDS

At the center of Maine is

the heart of adventure.

Climb Maine’s highest

peak, Katahdin, in

majestic Baxter State Park,

the northernmost point of

the Appalachian Trail. Fish

in 40-mile long Moosehead

Lake, renowned for its

landlocked salmon, brook

trout, and togue. Hiking,

snowmobiling, and wildlife

watching are some of the

most avidly pursued activities

in the Highlands. Bangor,

the area’s commercial and

cultural center, hosts world-

class concerts and events on

its riverfront, and is home to

author Stephen King.
