Work-life balance was a
struggle for me earlier
in my career. I’ve gotten
better as I finally realized
the importance of a
healthy balance between
work and home. With a
daughter who just turned
13, I remind myself all the
time how fast my kids are
growing up. I don’t want
to wake up one day and
realize that they are out
of the house and have
any regrets of time spent
as a family. So, I put a lot
of effort in making it to
games, school activities,
and to be a partner for
my wife.

I have come to believe
there is no work-life
balance, particularly in
today’s hyper-connected
world. There is simply a
lot of “out of balance,”
which can tilt one way
or the other as priorities
shift day to day. We end
up serving many masters,
which is fine if we’re able
to exercise disciplined
time management.
The key to me is to
truly enjoy and be fully
present when engaged
in life’s various priorities.
Vocation is a critical part
of that mix because, to
do it well, it takes a huge
amount of time. Love
your job; love engaging
with your colleagues
and clients; love doing
something special at
work. When those things
happen, then the daily
tug-of-war between
priorities is an acceptable,
energizing challenge.

I can be on the road
for weeks at a time, so
dinner time at home is
sacred. We have a rule at
my house: no phones or
electronic devices at the
dinner table. We are 100%
focused on connecting
with one another.
I also try to have happy
hour once a month with
my girlfriends to relax
and recharge.

A schedule is a must in my
world but I always leave
room for spontaneity.
Life is crazy. My life is
crazy. But, I truly love it
and feel I’m at my best
when juggling multiple
things: soccer games,
school dances, doctor
appointments, proposals,
client dinners, etc.
I realize I cannot truly “do
it all,” but I’m motivated
every day to try. I live
by these words from
the novel
Anne of Green

by Lucy Maud
Montgomery: ”Tomorrow
is always new with no
mistakes in it.”
