Cancelling Utilities and Services
Having utilities and services installed is easier than canceling them. Most companies do not
allow a person other than the one that signed for the service to request the service
terminated, unless you give the person a specific power of attorney duly registered by a
public notary.
Utilities such as telephone, cable, and internet provider, can be cancelled over the
phone
,
but make sure you have the account holder’s protocol number to request
cancellation. Whenever applicable, organize the return of equipment before you
leave the country
Bank accounts can only be closed after you are removed from local payroll and make
sure to cancel all bills addressed directly to the bank and stop any automatic
payments
Cancel all subscriptions you will no longer need and change addresses for the ones
you want to keep
Cancel club or gym membership
Taxes and payroll: make sure your employer has all the necessary documents to
finalize your process. Remember that a final income tax report must be filed so you
are no longer legally bound to pay further taxes
