Walking on a lead

This is a case of practice makes perfect. Start by

attaching a lead and allow your pup to wander,

making sure the lead does not get caught up.

Then take hold of the lead and follow the pup,

allowing him to choose where he wants to

go. The next step is to encourage your

pup to walk with you. You can encourage

him by holding a treat in your hand and

when he has walked a few steps at

your side, following the treat, stop and

reward him. Build this up gradually,

introducing circles and changes

of direction. Do not progress too

quickly; it is far better to have a

short stretch of good heelwork

where your puppy is co-operating,

rather than letting the lesson

become a chore.
