Walking on a lead
This is a case of practice makes perfect. Start by
attaching a lead and allow your pup to wander,
making sure the lead does not get caught up.
Then take hold of the lead and follow the pup,
allowing him to choose where he wants to
go. The next step is to encourage your
pup to walk with you. You can encourage
him by holding a treat in your hand and
when he has walked a few steps at
your side, following the treat, stop and
reward him. Build this up gradually,
introducing circles and changes
of direction. Do not progress too
quickly; it is far better to have a
short stretch of good heelwork
where your puppy is co-operating,
rather than letting the lesson
become a chore.
