Galway Cathedral

The Galway Cathedral is
located on Nun’s Island. It is
one of the largest and most
dominating buildings in Galway.
The Cathedral was completed
in 1965 after eight years of
building and it is located on
the site of the former city jail.
It was the last large church in
Ireland to be made from stone,
and features a huge dome at
the height of 145 feet. The
Cathedral is dedicated to Our
Lady Assumed into Heaven
and Saint Nicholas. The Galway
Cathedral is the youngest of
Europe’s great stone cathedrals.

Collegiate Church

St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church
is the largest medieval parish
church in Ireland, and it is in
continuous use in the heart of
Galway.The Church is dedicated
to St Nicholas of Myra,who
is the patron saint of children
and of mariners.There is some
disagreement when the Church
was built but it was definitely
finished by 1320.The Church
has had many famous visitors
over the years,the most famous
being Christopher Columbus who
prayed at the Church during a
visit to Galway in 1477.
