MBE for
Nottinghamshire
Branch member
Gurmit Kaur was made a Member of the British Empire
(MBE) by the HRH Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham
Palace on 25th October.
Gurmit collected her award for her services to policing on
a truly memorable day. She said: “I had her majesty award
me with the MBE and had the pleasure of speaking to her
about my work. It was such a surreal day.” She became
Nottinghamshire’s first Asian female police inspector in
2003, having previously worked with youth and community
groups to deliver programmes including Drugs Abuse
Resistance Education (DARE). She has been extremely
influential in developing excellent police and community
relations across the city of Nottingham and is a great
role model to colleagues and partners. She spent six
years working in Neighbourhood Policing in Nottingham,
before taking up her current post as Community Cohesion
Inspector. The role requires her to build links with new and
emerging communities in the city as well as to oversee much
of the work aimed at reducing gang and youth violence in
the city. In addition to her role in force, Gurmit has been
recognised nationally by the Black Police Association as
a mentor. She added: “Policing to me has always been
about meeting the needs of the community and listening
to the many vibrant and diverse groups that live here in
Nottingham. “I’m delighted I have had the opportunity to
do the work that I do, particularly in improving trust and
confidence in communities, which is one of the force’s
priorities.”
Gurmit has also been praised by Nottinghamshire Branch
members for her work within the branch, serving in a
number of roles before taking the Chair.

Luke Photoshoots Dad
in
New York City
Vice President Sean Hannigan was delighted to tell Police World that Luke Burnett
from Stockton-On-Tees was successful in the recent Cultural Competition. Luke
wrote a few lines about his pictures.
I took several photographs of my Dad
and New York Police Officers at work whilst he
was visiting the capital. I found one particularly funny as one officer in the photograph
with other colleagues appears to reach for his firearm upon my Dad approaching but
I’m told this is purely a coincidence and in fact he is raising his hand to shake my
Dad’s hand in greeting a fellow Officer from another country.
Well done Luke who wins a £20 Amazon gift voucher and his Dad wins a signed JEDD
print showing the 60th Anniversary of the IPA.
