IPA Race Day
at Mallory Park
IPA Race Day has been one of the highlights on the IPA calendar for
many a year. Leicestershire Branch work on behalf of No 5 Region to
ensure the event is available for members across the UK to enjoy.
T
his year the owners of Mallory Park
set out new financial restrictions on the
allocation of discounted tickets which had
to be met before the IPA could hold their event
in the same fashion as before. It meant that our
Region had to approach National with a view
to support the organising Branch. Our thanks,
therefore, also go to President Mick Luke for
stepping in with the financial resources to ensure
that this popular annual event could continue.
Having ironed out these teething issues, we again
were treated to a superb day’s racing, which
provided numerous crashes and determined,
dogged racing to whet most people’s appetites.
Despite not being able to advertise the event until
much later in the year, enthusiastic members
attended in large numbers to celebrate the
competition for the Peter Goodwin Memorial
Trophy. Four of our local Voluntary Police Cadets
were also in attendance to assist in the guiding
of members on their arrival. We again had
exclusive use of the ‘Hailwood’ suite and
members were able to wander around the pits
watching the activity surrounding the cars or
simply browse the shop or refreshments.
The IPA has had an interest in motor sport
since the sixties, when John Gott, the Chief
Constable of Northamptonshire was racing his
Austin Healey 3000, and has provided trophies
at such prestigious circuits as Silverstone,
Donington Park and now here at Mallory Park.
The Peter Goodwin Trophy was instituted by the
IPA Nottinghamshire Branch in memory of a local
Officer, Peter Goodwin, who died in service. Peter
was very interested in motor sport, so it is a fitting
tribute to him.
The team sponsored by the IPA was the Toyo
Tires Porsche Championship
(
www.porscheracingdrivers.co.uk) and the
drivers competed with each other in three
gruelling races. The trophy was won by Rick
Styrin, a worthy winner, who won by only a small
margin after a thrilling and exciting performance.
The Trophy was presented by No 5 Region Chair,
Clive Wood, and Rick was genuinely touched
about receiving the Trophy when he was informed
about the history behind it.
Sincere thanks are due to IPA Leicestershire
members, the voluntary Police Cadets, the
management and staff of Mallory Park
(Motorsport) Ltd and of course, all those IPA
colleagues who turned out in force to make
Sunday 27th September 2016 a day
to remember.
