EXTRAS

CLOSE

ENCOUNTERS

OF THE 4K

G

et set to be blown away by a close encounter

of the UHD kind next month.

In 1977,

Star Wars

didn't have the monopoly on

capturing the public's imagination. Following the

success of

Jaws

, Steven Spielberg's subsequent

project was facing extended reshoots and would

not make the summer blockbuster slot to face off

against George Lucas's Imperial onslaught. Just

as well, some might say, as it gave both films a

chance to find a wider audience. Released in the

US in November 1977,

Close Encounters of the

Third Kind

would become a box office sensation,

though Spielberg himself was dissatisfied with

the final cut. The director prepped a Special

Edition in 1980 that revealed the interior of the

mothership (something he was against), and in

1998 finally recut the film to his satisfaction. This

now definitive Director's Cut made its debut on

home video in 1998.

To mark the film's 40th Anniversary, CE3K

will be released in a 4K UHD edition, with extras

exploring the evolution and legacy of this enduring

sci-fi classic. There will also be a very special 40th
