KATHERINE WATERSTON

JOHN DENVER

The late singer-songwriter has been

ubiquitous on film soundtracks of late,

with his anthem

Take Me Home, Country

Roads

featuring in

Logan Lucky

(set inWest

Virginia, natch) and

more bizarrely as the

distress call that's

picked up in

Alien:

Covenant

. Additionally,

Annie's Song

and

This

Old Guitar

are used

to inappropriate (and

hilarious) effect during

bouts of bloody mayhem in

BenWheatley's

Free Fire

.

BLADE RUNNER

IN 4K UHD

W

ith sequel

Blade Runner 2049

in cinemas next month,

now is the time to brush up on Replicant lore and revisit

Ridley Scott's 1982 sci-fi classic – in UHD. Presenting a grim

future where forties' film noir meets techno-grunge, the polluted

cultural melting pot of Los Angeles 2019 (only two years to go!) is not only a triumph of

production design, it's also a reflection of the dehumanisation of society by the Tyrell

Corporation's "more human than human" Replicants, and a rumination on whether we're

more than just the sum total of our memories. It's big ideas like this – lurking in a simple

search-and-destroy detective yarn – that distinguished

Blade Runner

from the more

optimistic and flashy sci-fi films of the era. Whichever video format you choose – and let's

face it, a film like this is made for HD –

Blade Runner

is just as relevant today, and even

more essential in a cinematic landscape that now favours spectacle over intellect.

"I

t's so weird being an actor

because some days you're

just swinging upside-down off

the side of a spaceship shooting

an alien and you think, 'What the

hell am I doing here? How did this

happen?'"

It's a fair call from a rising star

whose face you might recognise

from

Boardwalk Empire

, or roles

in

Steve Jobs

and

Inherent Vice

.

Now, following three high profile

films this year, the daughter of

actor SamWaterston is about to

be a whole lot busier.

The scene she's describing is of

course from

Alien: Covenant

, in

which she plays terraformer and

Captain's widow Janet Daniels,

who assumes the Ripley role

when an alien fnds its way onto

the titular colony ship.

"I needed someone who was

physically imposing, tall, athletic

and a great actress," said Ridley

Scott of casting Waterston, also

citing her theatre background as

major plus.

Prior to fighting

aliens, Waterston

was waving wands

alongside Eddie

Redmayne in

Fantastic

Beasts and Where to Find Them

,

as American witch Porpentina

'Tina' Goldstein – a role she

will reprise in the sequel that's

currently filming.

Most recently, she played the

health worker who takes a shine

to Channing Tatum's character

in Steven Soderbergh's

Logan

Lucky

.

Waterston's next big role is as

Marguerite Westinghouse in the

(literally) electric historical drama,

The Current War

(due 2018). The

film details the rivalry between

George Westinghouse (Michael

Shannon) and Thomas Edison

(Benedict Cumberbatch) to create

a sustainable energy system.

She also reteams with Shannon

for the drama

State Like Sleep,

and has just completed the

arthouse sci-fi

Fluidic

and Jonah

Hill comedy

Mid '90s

.
