For a character that’s been around
for 75 years, it’s a wonder Diana,
Princess of Themyscira, hasn’t
been given her own movie until
now. Lynda Carter on TV was
all we had until statuesque
Israeli beauty Gal Gadot strode
confidently into a male-dominated
fray and made the role her own.
Balancing a childlike innocence of
the world beyond her island with a
fierce intelligence and the ferocity
and agility of a born warrior, Gadot is simply wonderful
and brings Diana to life with total conviction. Having
popped up briefly in
Batman v Superman
, this is a proper
introduction to Wonder Woman, one of a race of Amazon
warriors created by Zeus as peacekeepers and sheltered
from the outside world and the evil that men do. Into this
matriarchal society drops World War I pilot Steve (Chris
Pine), who tells Diana of the great war raging beyond her
shores. Determined to end the conflict, she sets sail for
the new world and a date with destiny.
Wonder Woman
brings some welcome levity to the DCEU; it’s a superhero
movie with humour and heart, a highly entertaining origin
story, and a ripping wartime adventure romp in the spirit
of
The Rocketeer
and
Captain America
.
SH
The future of justice begins with her.
WONDER WOMAN
The fifth
Pirates
film follows the
story of fan-favourite Will Turner’s
son, Henry (Brenton Thwaites),
who has spent his life trying to
break the curse that condemns
his dad to the ocean. The only
way to do that is by securing
the mystical Trident of Poseidon.
When the ship he’s aboard is set
upon by Spanish Sea Captain
Armando Salazar (Javier Bardem),
Henry is the sole survivor charged
with delivering a message –
death is coming for Captain
Jack Sparrow. Elsewhere, Carina (Kaya Scodelario) is on
trial for witchcraft (read astronomy), and holds the only
map to the Trident, and Jack is on death row after being
arrested for robbing a bank. As fate would have it, Henry
rescues them both, and the race is on to outrun Salazar,
find the artefact, and save Will. Thwaites and Scodelario
are endearing additions to the cast and have genuine
chemistry, but Depp’s drunken uncle shtick is wearing
a bit thin by round five.
Dead Men Tell No Tales
is an
archetypal
PotC
adventure with sea warfare, treasure,
swashbuckling, swordfights, and the return of Captain
Barbossa and the Flying Dutchman. You even find out
where Jack Sparrow got his name.
