Namibia
Before it gained its independence in 1990, the country of Namibia was
known as South West Africa. In the nineteenth century, South West Africa
had been a German colony. Then, after World War I, the territory became a
League of Nations Mandate administered by South Africa. With the end of
WorldWar II and the creation of the United Nations, most Mandates became
Trust Territories under the Trusteeship System. South Africa, however,
wanted to make South West Africa part of its own country instead of
Namibia, which gained its independence in 1990, is a land of deserts: it has the
least amount of rainfall in sub-Saharan Africa.
