Second and Third International Decades for

the Eradication of Colonialism

In 1999, the UN General Assembly admitted they would not be able to

eradicate colonialism by the twenty-first century as they had hoped.

They proposed a Second International Decade for the Eradication of

Colonialism, this one from 2001 to 2010, during which there was some

success. In 2002, the Territory of East Timor, administered by Portugal,

became independent as the country of Timor Leste. This was a great victory

for the United Nations, since many UN agencies worked together to bring

about this independence.

An aerial view of some of the tiny islands in the Caribbean Sea. The rights of

small island nations in all oceans and seas of the world have not always been

taken seriously by colonial powers.
