Regional Seminars
One of the most obvious steps taken during the International Decade for
the Eradication of Colonialism was the beginning of the regional seminars.
Each year in May, seminars are held in either the Caribbean or the Pacific,
alternating each year. Members of the Special Committee attend the
seminars, as do delegates from the Non-Self-Governing Territories and the
administrating countries. Representatives from other UN member countries
and agencies often attend these seminars as well.
The regional seminars offer an opportunity for the Non-Self-Governing
Territories to each make presentations detailing the situations in their
territories. Possible solutions and steps can be put forward and debated
at the seminars. With the information gathered at these yearly meetings,
precise action plans can be created, giving steps to be taken in each
territory to move it closer to self-determination.
The Tropic of Capricorn crosses Namibia in Africa, which gained independence
in 1990, at the beginning of the first International Decade for the Eradication
of Colonialism.
