Western Sahara
Western Sahara is the largest territory remaining on the Non-Self-Governing
Territories list. Located in the harsh Sahara Desert in northwest Africa, the
area is very sparsely populated. In 1963, the United Nations added the
territory to the Non-Self-Governing Territories list. At that time, it was under
Spanish control. In 1966, the United Nations made a resolution calling for a
referendum to be held inWestern Sahara to lead to self-determination.
