NEWSIn 2015, the SAIChE IChemE Gauteng Members group
awarded prizes to students at the University of the
Witwatersrand School of Chemical and Metallurgical
Engineering’s Final Year Oral Presentation Day. Forty
eight chemical engineering presentations were exam-

averaged from both internal and external examiners.
The prizes were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the
category of “Best Chemical Engineering Oral Presen-

IChemE Chief Executive to step down in July
Dr David Brown, Chief Execu-
tive of the Institution of Chemi-
cal Engineers (IChemE), has
announced that he will be step-
ping down from his role at the
organisation on 15 July 2016.
A search for his successor has
been initiated.
During David’s tenure,
IChemE has grown by some
75 % in membership, evolving
from a UK-centred organisa-
tion into a genuinely global
professional community, and
established its position as one
of the most ambitious and in-
novative professional organisa-
tions of its kind.
IChemE’s Council has rec-
ognised Brown’s work, stat-
ing: “David’s drive, vision and
energy have transformed the
IChemE organisation and
earned him respect across the
chemical engineering commu-
nity nationally and internation-
ally. He has been an articulate
and effective advocate for
science and engineering, and
for high standards of profes-
sionalism. His innovations
such as the Corporate Partner
scheme, the appointment
of Senior Ambassadors to
represent IChemE around the
world and the creation of new
special interest groups have
strengthened our community,
with success reflected in global
growth and the formation of
new member groups from
Calgary and Trinidad to New
Zealand. Chemical engineers,
and the businesses that rely on
them, owe David their gratitude
and appreciation.”
David Brown said: “IChemE
is embarking on a further pro-
gramme of change which will
take several years. After nine
fulfilling years at the helm, sup-
ported by a great team of staff
and countless volunteers from
among our members, I want to
give a new CEO the opportu-
nity to shape and lead that
programme and take IChemE
through towards its centenary
in 2022.” He will continue to
be active on behalf of science
and engineering and of the
chemistry-based industries,
and to encourage students
and young people to aspire to
engineering success.
