than solid wire with marker bands and
can be manufactured to precise OEM
specifications.
Available with outside diameters of
between 0.05mm and 1.52mm, the
radiopaque wire can incorporate gold,
platinum-iridium, tantalum, tantalum-
tungsten, and similar alloys bonded to high
strength wires such as 316LVM stainless
steel, nitinol, and MP35N
®
with 2 percent or
more cladding thickness.
Two popular wire examples are tantalum-
cored stainless steel and gold-clad nitinol.
These premium medical-grade wires are
priced according to composition and
quantity and can be supplied on spools.
They will not flake, blister or delaminate.
Safer cables on track
Nexans has launched its Flamex
®
SI-FR line of
fire-resistant cable products for the critical
power and control systems used in trains.
The new cables are designed to maintain
circuit integrity during a fire, enabling
conductors and operators to travel to
safety, out of a dangerous situation, if a fire
were to break out. All Flamex cables help
to limit both fire spread and the release of
harmful smoke.
Flamex SI-FR cables will withstand the harsh
operating conditions, such as variations in
temperature, snow, rain, sunlight and heavy
vibrations, encountered on rolling stock,
and are particularly suitable where high
temperatures are involved. The cables can
operate at up to 170°C with a maximum
operating voltage of 3kV or 6kV.
In addition to being fire retardant the
new Flamex range of power, control and
communication cables is designed to
emit only low levels of smoke during fire.
The cables are compliant with EN 45545-
2 requirements for the highest hazard
level class, and meet the fire resistance
requirements laid out by EN 50200 or IEC
60331 standards.
The range is asbestos-free and RoHS
compliant.
The perfect recipe?
Traditional XLPE cables are produced with
ready-made compounds with predefined
recipes of base LDPE, antioxidants and
peroxide. Maillefer has developed Smart
Dosing for combining separate compounds
online during extrusion.
Online dosing offers several improvements.
A range of suppliers offer base LDPE grades
for cable insulation without peroxide and
antioxidants, offering customers a freedom
of choice. Traditional XLPE compounds are
limited to chemicals that are solid at room
temperatures, otherwise the compound
