is a wide range of things they
might have to deal with, and
they undergo training to han-
dle all sorts of medical and
other emergencies. For in-
stance, people with mental
health problems need a dif-
ferent kind of help than someone with a physical
injury. Paramedics are trained how to try to com-
municate with such people and assess their prob-
lems. People with
diabetes
also present special
challenges, and paramedics need to learn to rec-
ognize their symptoms and deal quickly with what
can become life-threatening problems.
Sometimes when women in
labor
cannot
reach a hospital in time, a paramedic might help
deliver the baby. Every year, hundreds of babies
