are born safely in homes, cars, trains, and else-
where thanks to the quick work of paramedics.
Paramedics have to work in all sorts of en-
vironments, including after natural disasters. When
Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005, Davis
and paramedics from around the country rushed
to help. Paramedics are on the site of forest fires to
assist injured firefighters, and they are first respond-
ers when a bomb goes off or a building collapses.
“When I get to work at nine in the morning, I
have no idea where I’m going to go for 12 hours,”
noted Davis.
Best and Worst
Paramedics train hard to do their jobs as well as
they can. It’s demanding work, but it does have its
rewards. Davis said that the two best things about
being a paramedic are:
1. Getting to make a difference in some-
one’s life. “For me, I just want to make
someone’s life better when I leave them
from when I met them.”
