Davis, shown here
with new partner
Shawn Wilt, can
relax. His fast work
has saved a life. It’s
time to get ready to
go back into action.
“Normally, when we use the defibrillator, the
person is not awake,” Davis explained. “As I pre-
pared him, he asked me, ‘Is this going to hurt?’
I said, ‘You will never feel pain like this.’”
But painful as that would be for the injured
man, Davis knew this might be the man’s only
chance.
“I had never seen this, a person awake for
the paddles, so I was kind of excited, too. But it
had to be done because his heart could have
stopped at any second,” Davis said. “We
sedated
him with some medicine, and then we attached
the sticky pads to his chest. The pads are con-
nected to wires and the wires to the defibrillator
itself. We calculated what amount of electricity we
should used based on the readings we were get-
ting.
“Then we activated the defibrillator. In oth-
er words, we shocked him . . . and it worked!
His heart got back into proper rhythm. We were
all high-fiving because no one had ever seen that
before.”
