MEN'S

BASKETBALL

Both Torero players and fans

looked toward the 1981-1982bas

ketball seasonwith high hopes, as

the team faced the most trying

schedule in the history of USD

basketball. These great expecta

tions were well founded with the

return of starters David Heppell

(6'8", senior, center), Gerald Jones

(6'6", senior, forward), and Rusty

Whitmarsh (6*3", senior, guard),

all veterans reliable for their lead

ership and commitment to the

team. Seniors SteveRocha (6*8",

center) and Jim Bateman (6*5",

center) addedexperience depth to

the frontline, while guards John

Prunty (6'0", sophomore) and

Mike Ramsey (6*4", senior) gave

strength to the backcourt. Anad

ded boost to the torero attack was

the return of Don Capener, (6*6"

guard/forward) after spending a

two year sojourn in Japan, and

Paul Appleby, out last year witha

knee injury. New to the squad

were 6'0" guard Rich Davis and

forward Robby Roberts, bothgiv

ing a strong fight for starting posi

tions.

Three forwards were recruited

by USD in 6*7"Bob Kulovitz, 6*6"

freshman Anthony Ruess, and

6'6" Randy Brickley. Coach Bro-

velli also added two freshman

guards to the roster in 6'2" Jon

Freeman and 6'4" ByronRoberts.

The combination of seasoned vet

erans andeager rookies proved to

be a successful one for the 1982

season.
