BASEBALL
l*ast season saw the Torero baseball team finish the
sea on at
30-25-1, withone oftheir best records in Southern California
Baseball Association competition,
15-21-1. A good nucleus of
that '81 team returned this year for coach JohnCunningham,
including fifteen letterman, four starters, and two starting
pitchers. Returning starters were second
baseman Bruce 1om-
linson, first baseman Andy Asaro, rightfielder John Mullen,
and centerfielderDoug Paul. Pitchers Tom Iereschuk and A1
Brehm also returned to the starting rotation. Catching this
year were returner Paul Lofgren and junior college transfers
Steve Sciacca and Luke Maiberger. Completing the infield
were freshmenPaul VanStone at shortstop,
and Laci
Nagypal
at third base. Infielders Andre Jacas andMartin Harris were
moved to the outfield to take advantage of
their speed, where
they joined returning centerfielder Mark Chapman. Ihough
pitching has not traditionally been a strength for the Iorero
team inthe past,1982 pitching was bolstered by the returnof
veterans Eric Gaylord, Kevin Cammall,Glenn Godwin, ( hris
Ciampa, and ex outfielder Scott Williams. Freshmen Joe Boyd,
John Rule, Bob Cannadyalso joinedthe staffto adddepth.
Considering that the SCBA is probably the most competitive
collegiate baseball league in the nation, USD's underrated
baseball team has donevery well for itself both in gaining a
respectable reputation and in sending its playersinto the pro
fessional ranks. The 1982 season was no exception to thehigh
quality of competitive
spirit that is the Torerotrademark.
