The 1981-82 rugby team faced theunenvia
ble taskof trying to improve on
a near perfect
past season, and did so with great success.
The
Ruggers began the season with
internationally
respected Tu Wiley as their coach, along with
the return of their captainand moral leader
John Purcell. The returning team was com
posed of nine of the first fifteen from last
year's squad: Purcell at fly-back, Barney West
and Doug Holmes at the centers, Mike DeR-
oche at wing, and Matty Sandoval at fullback.
Also returning were Bob McDonnell, Eric
Zeigler, Joe Reittano, Andrew Walker, and
Greg Harold, last years MVP. Backed by an
excellent B team andtalented newcomers, the
team sdifficulty proved to be deciding who
would fill spot positions, and who wouldplay
where. The team won the university division
of the prestigious OMBAC tournament,
in one
of the many season highlights. In addition, the
Ruggers brought home the college division
championship of the highly respected San
Diego Rugby Tournamentbeating a formida
ble first ranked Dong Beach State with their
inspired playing.
The B team or second fifteen enjoyed an
other solid year of success, prompting the in
inevitable question of what would happen if
the sidesfaced each other in game competi
tion. BenWaldo Rubonwas placed as a player
on county side due to his
sizable contributions
to the game. Once again the ruggerswere well
represented on the All Star team by DeRoche
Holmes, Zeigler, Reittano, Harold Sandoval'
Jim Acurso, Bob McDonnell, and Chris Pas-
cale.
With this year's success, the
team andUSD
fans can only look forward to next year's com
petition.
