Becoming an Astronaut

ow does a scientist become an astronaut? The first step: Send

in an application! Just about any college graduate can apply to

be an astronaut. But it is a very selective process. In many countries

around the world, thousands of people try out for just a few spots.

You have to be an expert in your field, but you also have to be willing

to train and work hard. You will probably sacrifice time with your

family or have to move to where the space programs need you to

train. Plus, of course, there is danger involved. In the past 50 years, 30

astronauts have lost their lives due to accidents.

Astronaut training starts on Earth, of course. Here, an astronaut practices moving around in a harness

that mimics working in the zero gravity of space.
