Meiningen Steam Festival

& Much More

DAY 1

We depart London St Pancras International by

Eurostar to Brussels, and then by high speed

train to Frankfurt, where we have a welcome

evening meal at the Maritim Hotel. (D)

DAY 2

We commence our day with a visit to the

excellent Frankfurt Tram Museum. We then

continue to Darmstadt for a private charter

of the unique Darmstadt Steam Tram around

the town’s tracks. We end our day with a

guided tour of the former Darmstadt steam

depot now home to a fine collection of

heritage steam, diesel, electric and railcars in

the former half-roundhouse and marshalling

yard. We have arranged for a selection

of locomotives to be drawn out onto the

turntable for photography. (B)

DAY 3

Travelling aboard the local train service to

Wächtersbach for a private steam charter

with locomotive Emma’ along this 7 Kms 600

mm gauge line to Bad Orb where we have an

included light lunch and drink before returning

to Wächtersbach and onwards to Frankfurt

where the evening is free to explore at leisure

A wonderful steam holiday featuring a truly unique full day excursion

travelling by mainline steam from Frankfurt to Meiningen for the annual

Open Day at the last major steam works in Europe. Plus steam on

heritage lines of various gauges.

DAY 4

It’s mainline heritage steam today as we have

an amazing excursion with Pacific haulage

from Frankfurt to Meiningen to enjoy an

afternoon at the amazing annual Meiningen

Locomotive Works Festival. We tour the works

and view numerous steam locomotives giving

demonstration runs and footplate rides – quite

simply a now unique event that in yesteryear

we took for granted in the UK. Please note

this is a full day excursion and with so much

mainline running may require an early start

and late finish, but what a steam day!! (B)

DAY 5

Our final steam tour takes us on a visit to the

standard gauge Eisenbahn Wetterau for a

steam run along their line from Bad-Nauheim

to Münzenberg and return. An added bonus

is a visit to the Feldbahn ‘Oldtimer’ Festival,

a great way to conclude an excellent tour. (B)

DAY 6

We return by high speed trains from

Frankfurt via Brussels to London St Pancras

International arriving late afternoon. (B)

Maritim Hotel, Frankfurt

Centrally located Frankfurt hotel featuring all

non-smoking rooms complete with mini-bar,

laptop sized safe, flat screen TV and free Wifi.

The hotel has three restaurants, a lobby bar

and café.
