Northern Germany &

Beautiful Baltic Coast

Maximum Steam

DAY 1

Depart London circa 10.58 hrs by Eurostar to

Brussels then, via Cologne to Osnabrück where

after registering at our hotel we have a welcome

evening meal at a local restaurant. (D)

DAY 2

Today we make only our second ever visit to the

Hasetalbahn line travelling through the pleasant

rural scenery of “hare’s valley” on a line closed in

1970, but preserved and reopened in 1988. This is

a full day excursion of steam in heritage coaching

stock hopefully hauled by ‘Niedersachsen’, a

Henschel-built Bismarck class 0-6-0 from 1922

on one of the railway’s rare operating days. We

will be taking the steam journey from Haselünne

to Lönningen and return, then, after visiting the

locomotive shed and allowing time to get lunch,

we again steam from Haselünne to Lönningen.

Here after photographing the steam departure

we reboard our private coach for the journey back

to Osnabrück. Tonight we are free to enjoy the

evening at leisure. (B)

DAY 3

Today’s excursion takes a short, diesel hauled,

shuttle train to Zechenbahnhof where the

Osnabrück railway society has its depot. The

railway holds a fleamarket on this day and although

this is not a railway enthusiast event it does give

the opportunity for viewing the restoration of Class

41 052 which is under major restoration there. We

then travel by local services to Stadthagen where

we have a steam run from Stadthagen to Rinteln

and return, before taking the local train service

back for a final night in Osnabrück. (B)

DAY 4

We start the day by travelling by train to Gütersloh

where we transfer to Mühlenstroth for a private

steam photo charter at the excellent 600mm,

one kilometre long, line which has become a firm

favourite with our clients over the years. We have

a light lunch before returning to Gütersloh and

continuing by train to Rostock for transfer to, and

a welcome evening meal at, our hotel in the city

centre. (B,L,D)

DAY 5

After breakfast we have a 2 hour private vintage

tram charter of Rostock followed by a free

afternoon to enjoy at leisure. You may like to make

the short journey to Bad Doberan for a pre-tour

introduction to the street running steam on the

Molli. (B)

DAY 6

We continue this steam sojourn of discovery

at probably the most popular line in Northern

Germany: a full day on the Molli with unlimited train

rides between Bad Doberan and Kühlungsborn,

including the famous street running. Also, lunch is

included, along with a visit to the loco shed with a

photographic session in front of the shed. In the

afternoon we have made a special arrangement

with the railway whereby the train will ‘perform’ at

selected points for photographers on our private

lineside bus. (B,L)

DAY 7

We travel by train to Prora and Putbus for a day

of steam, including sandwich lunch, on Rügen

Island’s 750mm Rasender Roland line from Putbus

to Göhren and return with included day rover

tickets to enable you to have multiple journeys,

plus a guided visit to the loco shed at Putbus.

Additionally, we have timed ou visit to coincide with

one of the very few days a year when there will

be standard gauge steam ride between Bergen,

Putbus and Lauterbach Mole with Class 86 1333.

After returning to Rostock we bid farewell to the

city with an evening meal at our hotel. (B,L,D)

DAY 8

We travel by train to Hamburg to view ‘the Harz

Mountains to the Americas’ at Hamburg’s amazing

“miniatur-wunderland”, the largest model railway

in the world, which has cost 10 million Euros! This

amazing venue is stunning and requires a number

of hours to fully appreciate both the magnitude

and detail of the attraction. We then continue by

train to Hamburg-Bergedorf and our base at the H4

Hotel. Tonight is free to dine at leisure and explore

the town. (B)

Our ‘steam’ this morning is of the sailing type as

we take a steam boat cruise on the Alster aboard

the unique 1876 built St Georg viewing the city

Eisenbahn between Bergedorf Süd and Krümmel

concludes with steam on a rarely open, and even

more rarely visited, privately owned Angelner

also include photo run-past. We conclude our tour

with an evening meal back at our hotel (B,D)
