Key Takeaway
The share of all surgeries that were performed in the outpatient setting fell at for-profit
hospitals from 2012 to 2013, after rising at least fractionally each year since 2007. This was
accompanied by increased inpatient surgeries per staffed bed shares at these facilities
during the same year. Whether this represents more than a short-term deviation in the effort
to shift more patients to the outpatient setting remains to be seen, as it may only indicate
a temporarily higher rate of cases requiring more complex surgical interventions.
