(above) return with
album three next year, fittingly
entitled
The Third.
Ex-Clash guitarist Mick
Jones has produced it. Speaking of
ex-Beatles (see left), the late
George
Harrison’s
solo albums (recorded for The
Beatles’ Apple Records between 1968 and
1975) have been made available in
remastered form for Christmas. In January,
UK label Domino Records (through EMI/
Universal in Australia) will release
G Stands
for Go-Betweens,
a four-disc retrospective of
the legendary Brisbane band’s career.
The
Decemberists
return with their first album in
three years,
What a Terrible World, What a
Beautiful World
on January 16.
Justin
Townes Earle
– fresh from a successful visit
in October – will release a new album called
Absent Fathers
in mid-January. Ex-Oasis man
Noel Gallagher
returns with a second
High Flying Birds
album,
Chasing Yesterday,
in March.
James Blake
is reportedly
over halfway through a new album, and
has hinted at a Kanye West collaboration.
After charming audiences and critics with
his album
Fear Fun,
Father John Misty
is
releasing
I Love You Honeybear
in February.
Jose Gonzalez
– after garnering acclaim
with the band Junip – is back with another
solo album called
Vestiges and Claws
in
February. Ex-Libertines frontman
Carl Barat
releases
Glory Days
with his band The
Jackals in February.
Music history
December 3, 1976
Reggae legend Bob Marley survives an
assassination attempt. While rehearsing
with The Wailers at his compound in
Kingston, Jamaica, seven
gunmen fire shots into the
house. Marley receives
minor injuries, but his
wife and manager are
seriously hurt. He left to
live in the UK for two
years, shortly after.
“Something I learned: Johnny
Rotten’s sister is deputy head of the BBC
Archives.”
Frank Turner, King of Research
“Ok Sydney, who was taking selfies with my mum last
night? I realise this sets up a lot of mum jokes but let’s be
kind now.”
Flight Facilities keep it in the family
“ I have to keep telling myself when walking hotel corridors:
“Missy, NO. It is not acceptable to eat other people’s
leftovers.”
Missy Higgins is peckish on tour

RZA on the real meaning of
P.E.A.C.E
I
t’s perhaps surprising that it’s
taken until 2014 – over 50 years
since his first professional
recording – for someone to produce a
comprehensive tribute to the music of Paul
McCartney. But
The Art of McCartney
– the
brainchild of LA producer Ralph Sall
– does just that, over 42 tracks.
Comprising material McCartney
recorded with The Beatles,
Wings, and solo, the guest
artists are all backed by
McCartney’s regular touring band –
who know the material better than anyone.
The line-up of guests is eclectic to say the
least: everyone from Bob Dylan growling
his way through
Things We Said Today
, to
Jane’s Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell
sashaying through the Stax-influenced
Got
to Get You Into My Life.
The best moments
of any tribute album come when artists
genuinely engage with the spirit of a song,
and bring their own unique expression to it.
Some highlights of
The Art of McCartney
include Dr John’s
genuinely energised
take on
Let ‘Em In
, Allen Toussaint’s
delightful
Lady Madonna
, and Robin Zander
and Rick Nielsen’s no holds-barred rave-up
on
Jet
– the cover perfectly in keeping with
the pair’s career in Cheap Trick. Macca fans
should find much to enjoy.
The Art of McCartney
is out on
Kobalt/Inertia.
“What does #FF mean? I hope it means funny feminist.”
Kathleen Hanna waxes philosophical on hashtags.
