LAW-2216 Intellectual Property Survey

HYB-Hybrid Course-Course for which no more than one-third of the information is online

Intellectual property law protects creations of the mind: inventions, trade secrets, artistic

creations, computer software, brand names and image/persona. This course will provide an

overview of the US legal systems that protect such creations, with primary focus on patent,

advanced intellectual property courses within the Intellectual Property Concentration curriculum.

This course is strongly recommended as a precursor to Patent Law, Copyright Law, and

Trademark Law.

Spring only: The IP Survey course will be taught as a three credit on-line hybrid course during

the spring semester. Hybrid courses (also called blended learning) utilize technology to create a

variety of learning environments. This enables the use of technology to both enhance learning

and to respond to a wide range of learning styles and preferences. It will also provide for weekly

assessments (tests) that will count towards your final grade in the class. The majority of your

learning activities will occur on-line outside the classroom. This will provide you with

significant flexibility to complete assignments and assessments on your own schedule within

certain specified time-frames. Therefore, face-to-face (F2F) classroom time will be reduced to

one weekly meeting for an hour. Typically, F2F classroom time will be devoted to discussing

application of the on-line materials to problems/hypotheticals. On average, a minimum of 5 to 6

hours per week will be required for on-line activities. There is no book for this class. All

materials will be provided (for free) on-line in electronic form via Blackboard.

Prerequisites: You must have a computer, high-speed internet access and an email account to

participate in this class. Additionally, you will need basic computer skills including: using a

browser; knowing how to download, open and print Power Points, WORD documents, HTML

files and PDF files; and knowing how to play/download video and audio files provided on-line.

A significant amount of the materials will provided as PDF files that include numerous

hyperlinks.
