LAW-2079 Preparing for Practice

Restricted to First year law students.
Legal employers expect graduates to develop core skills while in law school to meet the needs of
clients and their business objectives. This optional course provides first year law students with an
introduction to some of the skills they will need to succeed in practice and meet the demands of
the emerging legal market. The course is composed of three modules: (1) Professional
Communication, (2) Negotiation, and (2) Problem Solving. Each module explores core
competencies required to succeed as a lawyer in the 21st Century.
Grading/Evaluation:
This course is pass-fail to encourage experimentation and reduce the stress of being evaluated on
group work. Students who attend class and contribute to class discussion and their group’s work
product will receive one credit for this course. Given the short schedule missing a single class
will result in not receiving credit for the course. Students are expected to come to class prepared,
participate, and satisfactorily complete assignments by the deadlines; failure to do so may result
in the student not getting credit for the course.
