LAW-2071 Children and the Law

Hon. Stephen Limon,

2 credits day; 2 credits evening.

The theme of this course is the role of law in the division of power among the child, the parents,

and the state. Selected topics include: the extent of parental rights to rear children without state

intervention, First Amendment rights of children, rights of children in school, children's

economic relationship with the family, child abuse and neglect, child custody, state-enforced

limitations on the liberty of children, delinquency, and status offenses. Taught as a seminar, the

course requires a final paper.
