Zambia met its national target to keep HIV
prevalence rates below 15.6 per cent. The national
HIV prevalence rate among adults (15-49 years)
was reduced from 15.6 per cent to 14.3 per cent
between 2002 and 2007. This reduction is the
result of effective strategies for the provision of
antiretroviral drugs, which not only lowered the
prevalence rates but significantly reduced the rates
of mother-to-child transmissions of HIV/AIDS.
Progress has also been made in combating malaria.

41.1 per cent in 2008 (UNDP, 2012).
