The Barotse floodplain is a designated Ramsar site. Covering an area of 1.2 million hectares, it is the second largest wetland in Zambia
after the Lake Bangweulu system. The floodplain is mainly comprised of grasslands and a number of small wooded areas on higher
ground (Van Gils, 1998). It is flanked by a plateau of Kalahari sand covered in semi-evergreen woodland, and is interspersed with low-
lying dambos (Timberlake, 1998).
